Just when the San Francisco 49ers thought they had rid themselves of the Brandon Aiyuk distraction for good, he has officially turned in his reinstatement papers and will be reporting to the team's training facility Friday.

Now, the 49ers will be faced with a choice: keep him under contract, release him, or attempt to find a trade partner for him. While they now have the opportunity to get something in return for the diva, they may lose something even more valuable.

San Francisco is 6-1 and coming out of their bye, presumably healthier than they were just a week ago. With Brock Purdy playing at an elite level, they look like one of the league's most formidable Super Bowl threats. After an offseason marred by one distraction after another, they had seemingly put the fiascos behind them. Now, the Aiyuk saga has reared its ugly head once again, and he is putting more pressure on the franchise than before.

To this point, the 49ers have held all the leverage in the situation. With Aiyuk getting put on the left squad list, he was forced to file reinstatement papers if he wished to return to the league.

Instead, he went on an offseason-long tirade on social media, became the Washington Commanders' biggest fan for a while, and arguably zapped any sort of trade value he may have had.

Brandon Aiyuk can only serve to distract 49ers from ultimate goal

While the 49ers aren't necessarily forced to make an immediate decision, Aiyuk is just another problem their front office has to deal with. It couldn't come at a worse time, either, as general manager John Lynch is still looking for ways to bolster the San Francisco roster ahead of the November 10th trade deadline. With the clock ticking, Aiyuk represents one more obstacle that needs to be sorted out, and it could detract from various players the 49ers vying for.

If the 49ers were to outright release him, they would absorb a significant amount in dead cap space. Though they could take the hit, it would obviously not be the most financially desirable outcome.

If Lynch were to go against his word and bring Aiyuk back into the fold, there is no telling what adding a stick of dynamite would do to the current team dynamic. It's hard to believe players would welcome him back with open arms, and he would likely do even more irreparable damage to the franchise.

Unfortunately, the 49ers are in a bit of a lose-lose-lose situation, where every decision could lead to a negative outcome. With the deadline looming and the team's most important games ahead of them, Brandon Aiyuk's decision to file for reinstatement will surely create ripple effects felt throughout the franchise.
