The San Francisco 49ers have long had a reputation for being shrewd negotiators at the contracts table. And while this has ebbed and flowed over the years, including 2025's revisited attitude toward being more hardlined on contracts, there's primarily been one constant through it all.
Executive Vice President of Football Operations Paraag Marathe.
Marathe is no stranger to Niners fans. In fact, his reputation might've been a bit soured during some of the Niners' darker years ahead of 2017 when general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan took over, stemming largely from the former's increased involvement in on-field decisions.
Despite that, Marathe has been an integral part of owner Jed York's front office for decades now, and San Francisco has only rarely gotten into serious contract and salary-cap trouble under Marathe's watch.
Yet it's possible Marathe might be gone soon, provided a recent Major League Soccer rumor is true and plays out a certain way.
MLS may grab Paraag Marathe as its next commissioner
According to John Ourand of Puck, as well as a piece by Sportico's Kurt Badenhausen and Eben Novy-Williams, Marathe is one of three finalists for the open MLS Commissioner role, vacated by Don Garber recently:

I'm told that the MLS Commissioner search has narrowed to three execs who could replace Don Garber.
* LAFC co-owner and former PE exec Larry Berg
* Veteran media exec David Nathanson
* Senior exec with the 49ers Paraag Marathe
A new MLS commissioner is expected to be…
Should Marathe ultimately get the gig, he'd almost certainly step away from all duties with San Francisco, putting York and Lynch into a bit of a bind, in terms of who'd chiefly negotiate their player contracts.
It's worth noting both Marathe and the York family have delved into the soccer world already, primarily with 49ers Enterprises and an association with Leeds United FC in England.
Needless to say, Marathe's previous involvement in soccer, albeit across the pond, must have had a major influence on the decision to name him a finalist for MLS Commissioner.
It'll be an interesting development to watch, albeit one most 49ers fans likely won't regard much until (and if) Marathe gets the new gig.
