San Francisco wide receiver might've been the catalyst in the team's divisional win over the Seattle Seahawks, but his 113-yard effort is hardly the most memorable part of his day.
During the second quarter, Evans was blocking Trevon Diggs, and the cornerback didn't appreciate his intensity. Diggs began jawing at Evans, and the wideout hilariously grabbed him by the shoulders and turned him around, seemingly to check who he was even talking to.
At first glance, the move looked staged, as if Evans was trying to say, "Who even are you?" It was a cold knockout punch as far as trash talk goes, but Evans' admission after the game makes the act even more perfect.
It turns out that he was serious. It wasn't even a bit.
"I honestly didn't know it was him... I think I, like, pushed him, and then I was like, 'Who are you?' and I looked to make sure, and I was like, 'Oh, It's f****** Diggs," Evans said after the game.
Mike Evans might've thrown even more shade Diggs' way with admission
It's one thing to pretend you don't know someone as a sign of disrespect. Evans wouldn't have been the first athlete to try to minimize an opponent. But the fact that Evans was completely serious the whole time means that Trevon Diggs really was irrelevant in the eyes of his counterpart.
Evans' curiosity as to whom he was talking to drove him to perform the hilarious maneuver of twisting Diggs' shoulders around, and the wide receiver's authenticity in his actions may have been what made the moment priceless.
It also sheds light on Trevon Diggs' ongoing career implosion. After putting the league on notice with 11 interceptions in his rookie year with the Dallas Cowboys, Diggs hit multiple stops on his way to matching up against the 49ers in Week 5. In fact, he was a member of the Seahawks' practice squad before getting called up on Saturday.
Evans has matched up against Diggs before. The fact that the wideout didn't know who the cornerback was sheds even more light on how far he has fallen off since his glory days in Dallas.
Mike Evans' troll can't overshadow his true value to 49ers in Week 5
In the end, Mike Evans pulled a hilarious stunt by turning Trevon Diggs around to see the name on his back, but the sincerity of his actions is what made the act memorable. It was the cherry on top of a Hall-of-Fame performance by the star pass catcher, and he arguably saved the 49ers' perfect season with catch after timely catch.
Evans and the 49ers will head back to Santa Clara to host the Washington Commanders. The Seahawks travel to Denver to face the Broncos.
As for Trevon Diggs, who knows what his NFL future holds.
