After the Los Angeles Rams made their blockbuster trade for edge rusher Myles Garrett, there was a fresh round of calls for the San Francisco 49ers to trade for Maxx Crosby. A deal still feels unlikely, but Crosby’s comments on quarterback Brock Purdy are only going to add fuel to the fire.

As part of the NFL Top 100 ranking, in which Purdy was ranked No. 85, Crosby shared some very kind words about San Francisco’s signal caller:

“Anybody that gets in that Niners system, people find a way to discredit them just because of how good Kyle Shanahan is and they’ve always had a lot of talent around him, but you’ve seen Brock in his own right make some plays and do certain things that are not just system quarterback-type plays. He’s one of the better young quarterbacks in the league, man. He’s talented and you see that with how great that offense is able to operate.”

Crosby refuting the whole “system quarterback” narrative surrounding Purdy is only going to make fans want the Niners to trade for the edge rusher even more.

It’s so telling that players, often even defensive players, have nothing but high praise for Purdy. Even Garrett gave Purdy some kind words after the 49ers and Cleveland Browns squared off last season.

It’s questionable whether the Las Vegas Raiders would entertain a trade with the 49ers, given how the two franchises feel about one another, but maybe at some point the Raiders would be open to it.

A young 49ers fan recently tried to recruit Crosby while getting a picture with him, and Crosby politely said that he couldn’t while also saying, “You never know.”

The 49ers can afford to be patient on the Crosby front, though. They should wait until midseason to make any sort of deal because there are legitimate concerns about Crosby’s health that led to the trade between the Raiders and Baltimore Ravens falling apart earlier this offseason.

Plus, the Niners do not know for sure if they’re going to be a legitimate contender. They should be on paper, but it’s not hard to imagine injuries swallowing them whole again and tanking their season.

They should wait until they know for sure they are in the hunt for the playoffs, and maybe by then, the Raiders are having a bad year and are willing to trade him.

Crosby going to the 49ers makes so much sense on paper, but it is going to take time for it to happen. Maybe he will be teammates with Purdy soon and can tell him how good of a quarterback he is in person.
