San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch made it clear that his team plans to add wide receivers in the offseason. He said that could include drafting them or signing free agents.
One free agent who is set to be available would have the added benefit of ticking off Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur if Kyle Shanahan and the Niners could get him.
Romeo Doubs is not a star receiver by any stretch, but he has been a solid presence in Green Bay since 2022. Across his first four NFL seasons, he has just over 2,400 receiving yards and 21 receiving touchdowns. He is seen as a good fit for the 49ers by one analyst.
In 2025 with Green Bay, Doubs had 55 receptions for 724 yards and six touchdowns. It was a solid statistical year, so he will hit free agency with some momentum.
He probably will not come super cheap. There are certainly higher-profile names ahead of him in free agency, but Spotrac projects that his market value is roughly $12 million. It makes sense as he is about to turn age 26 and could be entering his prime years.
It just remains to be seen if the 49ers will be willing to spend more than they did last season.
The Niners may have no other choice, though. The wide receiver class in this year's NFL Draft is pretty stacked, but a lot of the top names may already be gone by the time San Francisco picks late in the first round.
Even if the Niners do draft a receiver they like, history has shown it will take time for a rookie to gain Shanahan's trust. Adding a proven player like Doubs who has played in a similar offensive style under LaFleur in Green Bay could help San Francisco feel a lot more secure at the position even if he is pricier than they would like.
The 49ers are obviously going to move on from Brandon Aiyuk this offseason, and it would not be surprising if Jauan Jennings and Kendrick Bourne depart in free agency. That would leave some holes on the depth chart, so bringing in Doubs would help fill one of them in a big way.
Plus, Shanahan would absoluutely love to steal away one of LaFleur's weapons. The two coaches are longtime friends, but they want to beat each other at all costs so if San Francisco beat the Packers in the playoffs next season, thanks to a big play to Doubs, that would make it an even sweeter victory.
