Training camp is coming up soon for the San Francisco 49ers, and that means the camp battles will be underway soon. While it’s just training camp, there are still some players who are going to be feeling the pressure of those behind them on the depth chart.
These players have either struggled or been inconsistent in recent seasons and need to prove they deserve to be starters. The pressure is on, and they need to deliver.
Particularly these three.
CB Renardo Green
No matter how many times the 49ers shoot down the notion they are interested in trading cornerback Renardo Green, his status is still going to be up in the air until he starts playing some more consistent football.
The last memory many 49ers fans have of Green is head coach Kyle Shanahan chewing him out on the bench last season in the playoffs against the Seattle Seahawks.
Now, the Niners have no shortage of options to replace him if he’s not cutting it. Rookie Ephesians Prysock and veteran additions like Jack Jones and Nate Snead can step in if needed.
S Ji’Ayir Brown
Another player who has been involved in trade chatter and has something to prove is safety Ji’Ayir Brown. He has shown he can be a solid player in his first few NFL seasons, it’s just the consistency that has been lacking from the Penn State product.
Ashtyn Davis, Marques Sigle, and even the undrafted rookie Jalen Stroman out of Notre Dame all have a chance to snag Brown’s starting spot, so he will be looking over his shoulder if he doesn’t perform in training camp.
Isaac Guerendo
Running back Isaac Guerendo was iced out of San Francisco's rushing attack last season and suffered a pectoral injury that may keep him out for most of training camp. If and when he does return, he needs to make one heck of an impression to make the roster.
He will have to beat out players like Jordan James and rookie Kaelon Black, which will not be easy because, obviously, the Niners are high on both of those guys.
If Guerendo struggles early on, then San Francisco may not hesitate to move on from him and clear space on the roster.
The NFL can be brutal, and if these players aren’t on their game in training camp, then the 49ers will not hesitate to pull the plug and try somebody else.
