When someone thinks of trench warefare and stalemates, history lessons of World War I typically come to mind.
Right now, though, they could also apply to left tackle Trent Williams and the San Francisco 49ers.
"Trenches" is appropriate for Williams, one of the league's premier blockers who'll turn 38 years old this offseason. And "stalemate" well describes his standoff with the Niners right now. San Francisco wants to lower his cap hit for 2026, while the future Hall of Famer wants guaranteed money and knows there's a robust market for his services.
Neither side appears willing to surrender ground. Yet neither party has been able to make any substantial advances either, according to the latest scoop.
Latest Trent Williams update defines 'stalemate' vs. 49ers
NFL insider Jason La Canfora, writing for Sportsboom, painted a bleak picture in contract talks between Williams and 49ers, suggesting that little progress (if any) has been made since the initial report of a standoff first broke earlier this offseason.
"They aren't anywhere close to a deal yet," La Canfora reported. "And I don't think anything happens unless the 49ers make a big move."
The Niners' latest move was to decline a $10 million option bonus that was due on Friday, March 20, which would increase Williams' cap hit in 2026 up to nearly $47 million but left the door open for a renegotiated deal.
However, at least according to La Canfora, that hasn't meant much at all in discussions.
"Williams doesn't have much motivation to play for anything less than the $33M in cash he is set to earn in 2026," La Canfora continued. "And the 49ers clearly aren't comfortable with that, hence the renegotiation talks. Williams is acutely aware there is a robust market for his services as a free agent or through trade."
What's clear now is this won't be a quick fix, and the in-the-trenches standoff is likely going to continue for some time.
Especially with no resolution in sight.
