Latest Trent Williams report is the last thing 49ers need this offseason

Great. Just great.

It'd be nice if the San Francisco 49ers could go through an offseason without any sort of negative drama, but that never seems to be the case.

This offseason, it appears as if future Hall of Fame left tackle Trent Williams could be at the center of the Niners' next headache.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, San Francisco is far apart in any sort of resolution regarding his contract, which carries a $39 million cap hit in 2026. Even worse, per the report, the 49ers are preparing to release the veteran if the two sides can't come up with some amicable solution:

Lovely.

Unfortunately, this is a situation the 49ers have largely created for themselves by not identifying a true long-term replacement or high-quality backup. Williams undoubtedly knew this, and as he turns 38 years old this offseason with no immediate plans to retire, it makes sense why he'd use some serious leverage to his advantage.

The Niners, meanwhile, have very little aside from potentially finding a feasible replacement via the NFL Draft in April despite some other seriously pressing needs.

According to Over the Cap, an outright release would generate $4.69 million in cap savings but against a whopping $34.15 million in dead money, which makes very little sense from a financial perspective.

In light of that, Williams appears to have significantly more leverage than originally thought, putting general manager John Lynch and Co. into a serious bind.

Granted, San Francisco has had contractual standoffs with its franchise left tackle before, and it's not overly shocking to see one develop again despite Williams already being in the top five of highest-paid tackles in the league.

While an outright release would seem extreme, one can't rule it out until the 49ers explore every plausible solution to put this in the rearview mirror.
