Throughout the offseason, rumors surrounding the availability of Raiders edge rusher Maxx Crosby circulated the league. Many thought the San Francisco 49ers were an ideal landing spot for the star, but now in the heat of August, nothing has happened.
With recent news of the 49ers signing fellow pass rush specialist Ogbo Okoronkwo, it appears they are moving forward without him. While Okoronkwo is a post-prime veteran who serves as a mere depth piece, it is a clear response to Crosby's own proclamation he made earlier this week.

Amid the flurry of trade rumors, Crosby set the record straight. There is nowhere he'd rather be than Vegas.
49ers new signing hardly rings of Crosby status
While the Niners' new edge rusher brings experience and a history with defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, his resume doesn't necessarily scream "game-changer." In his six seasons, he has accumulated just 17 sacks and was inactive for his first three weeks in Philadelphia last year before he tore his triceps tendon.
With that being said, he will likely serve as little more than an insurance policy as San Francisco begins the season with Nick Bosa, Mykel Williams, and Romello Height as their go-to guys out wide.
Whether that is enough remains to be seen.
49ers' signing raises questions about their defensive confidence levels
With the signing comes questions: Do the 49ers lack confidence in their ability to rush the passer with their current roster makeup? Was Crosby deemed a must-add before he all but terminated any possibilities of a move?
Such concerns are warranted given the laundry list of injuries the team has already endured, not two weeks into training camp. Now, instead of adding a blockbuster piece, the 49ers have resorted to simply adding more bodies to put on the field.
With many unproven young defenders surrounding Bosa and superstar Fred Warner, it is not unreasonable to worry about whether or not San Francisco has enough firepower to torment opposing quarterbacks. Much of their success hinges on rookies and second-year players like Romello Height, Mykel Williams, C.J. West, and Alfred Collins. The latter three are all entering their sophomore years as they attempt to overcome forgettable rookie campaigns.
While Crosby could've changed the entire landscape of the NFC West, the San Francisco 49ers have no choice but to move on without any legitimate reinforcements. Whether it is enough to topple both the Seattle Seahawks and the Los Angeles Rams is anybody's guess.
