Late-season gauntlet won't derail 49ers' playoff hopes in predictions for 2026

The Niners now know when and where they'll play their opponents for the upcoming season. Niner Noise takes a stab at predicting the outcomes.

The NFL is an ever-present element of the sports landscape in the United States, and nothing makes that more evident than the league's ability to host a primetime show about the schedule release.

Each team in the league also adds a personal touch, creating videos displaying the schedule in a creative way, with the San Francisco 49ers leaning into the history of the team (which will celebrate its 80th anniversary this season) as part of the reveal.

No matter which way you look at the schedule, it's here, and the Niners and fans are now clear not just who they'll play, but when and where those games will take place.

San Francisco's roster isn't close to being set, although it's easy to speculate there as well, but that won't stop us from predicting how the 49ers' season will go based on the schedule.

Weeks 1-4

Week 1 @ Rams (Melbourne, Australia): Thursday, Sept. 10, 8:35 p.m. ET

We've known about this one for a while, with the Los Angeles Rams clearly so tired of the 49ers fans taking over SoFi Stadium that they were willing to fly to Australia to save face.

The travel is a major factor here, but these are two rivals who know each other well. Could this be the start of the final ride for Matthew Stafford?

Unfortunately, the Rams might be more cohesive at this point in the season, as Kyle Shanahan and his coaching staff look to solidify the core of the roster.

Outcome: Close loss in a wild game

Record: 0-1

Week 2 vs. Dolphins: Sunday, Sept. 20, 4:25 p.m. ET

The Niners don't get the longest possible rest period after the long flight home from Australia (the Rams do, of course), but they do get a softer landing.

Miami is likely in the running for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2027 NFL Draft, and while this might feel like a bit of a trap game, it's early in the season for the 49ers to avoid that.

This game also starts a rare run of home games in September, something San Francisco has tried to avoid due to the heat in Santa Clara early in the season.

Outcome: 49ers take out their Week 1 frustrations on a bad Dolphins team

Record: 1-1

Week 3 vs. Cardinals: Sunday, Sept. 27, 4:05 p.m. ET

The second NFC West matchup in three weeks, with yet another home game against a weaker opponent.

While the rest of the division rivals should battle it out for supremacy, don't expect the same from the Cardinals, who are still trying to find their way.

The first season under new coach Mike LaFleur probably won't go well, and the 49ers have a chance to welcome him to the division, albeit quite rudely.

Outcome: A second straight win in massive fashion

Record: 2-1

Week 4 vs. Broncos: Sunday, Oct. 4, 4:25 p.m. ET

This is maybe the first litmus test of the season for the Niners.

Sure, you could say it's the Rams, but the other elements and X-factors make that at harder sell. But this week and next, that matters.

Denver's defense is quite strong, and the Broncos are coming off an unexpected run in the playoffs that probably only ended because Bo Nix got hurt in the divisional round.

We'll give the 49ers a slight edge here, although it might not be pretty.

Outcome: An ugly win. First Eddy P walk-off of the season.

Record: 3-1

Weeks 5-8

Week 5 @ Seahawks: Sunday, Oct. 11, 4:25 p.m. ET

The second road trip of the season is much shorter than the first. Unfortunately, it means a jet up to the Pacific Northwest to take on the defending Super Bowl champs.

There are a lot of similarities between this Seattle team and Denver, but after the beatdowns the Seahawks gave the 49ers late in the year last season, this is a bigger mountain for the Niners to climb.

The hope is that better health for the 49ers will make this a better matchup than those games last year, but it still feels like a loss.

Outcome: Hopefully, the Niners don't get blown out again.

Record: 3-2

Week 6 vs. Commanders, Monday, Oct. 19, 8:15 p.m. ET

One away day gives way to yet another home game, this time the Niners' first "normal" primetime matchup on Monday Night Football.

Could this see the return of a certain disgruntled receiver to Levi's Stadium? Plenty has to happen before that comes to pass, but it could happen.

This is a strange one, because Washington was quite good in Jayden Daniels' first season, but quite poor last season. Either way, this feels like a game the 49ers should win if they have playoff aspirations.

Outcome: A not-so-welcome return, and a win for the home team.

Record: 4-2

Week 7 @ Falcons: Sunday, Oct. 25, 1:00 p.m. ET

One of two 10 a.m. PT starts for San Francisco, it unfortunately comes on a short week after playing on Monday night.

Call this the Raheem Morris revenge game, as the newly minted 49ers' defensive coordinator will want to inflict some level of agony on the team that fired him as head coach after last season.

The NFC South is bizarrely competitive, but with Michael Penix's return in question, even at this point in the season, this is a game the 49ers should win.

Outcome: An early start and another win.

Record: 5-2

Week 8: BYE

It will come at the perfect time.

Weeks 9-12

Week 9 vs. Raiders: Sunday, Nov. 8, 4:05 p.m. ET

After the bye week, the 49ers get a bit of a soft landing back into playing games with the Raiders coming to Santa Clara.

The real question is whether the Vegas quarterback will be the No. 1 overall pick, Fernando Mendoza, or Kirk Cousins, a reunion between Kyle Shanahan and his favorite son.

No matter who the signal-caller is, there's little reason to believe the Niners can't pull this win out.

Outcome: Another W out of the bye week

Record: 6-2

Week 10 @ Cowboys: Sunday, Nov. 15, 4:25 p.m. ET

This storied rivalry hasn't been that much of a contest in recent years, as the 49ers have rather owned the Cowboys, no matter when or where they play.

Dallas has good players, and its defense should be much improved, but until proven otherwise, there's little reason to believe the 49ers will falter in Jerry World.

Outcome: The winning streak continues.

Record: 7-2

Week 11 vs. Vikings (Mexico City, Mexico): Sunday, Nov. 22, 8:20 p.m. ET

The 49ers' first Sunday Night Football matchup of the season comes on a neutral site, as they head back to Mexico City for their second international game of the year (and the final one of 2026 for the NFL).

It will still feel like a home game for the Niners, who'll get to see old friend Jauan Jennings, even if he won't return to Levi's for the first time as an opposing player.

The atmosphere should be incredible, and the 49ers should be able to extend their winning streak against a suspect Vikings squad.

Outcome: Racking up those wins before the gauntlet.

Record: 8-2

Week 12 vs. Seahawks: Sunday, Nov. 29, 4:25 p.m. ET

It's a little surprising the NFL didn't schedule at least one of these matchups in prime time, but I guess Fox gets to have its top games, too.

Another litmus test for the season, one in this scenario, puts an end to the 49ers' long winning streak. Until they show it, you have to believe the Seahawks again have the Niners' number.

Outcome: The streak ends as the run of tough games begins.

Record: 8-3

Weeks 13-18

Week 13 @ Giants: Sunday, Dec. 6, 1:00 p.m. ET

This one feels like the real trap game of 2026.

Coming off a big game against the champs, traveling across the country, an early start. Doesn't feel good.

They shouldn't lose to this team, but they might.

Outcome: A loss you shake your head at and wonder why it happened.

Record: 8-4

Week 14 vs. Rams: Sunday, Dec. 13, 4:25 p.m. ET

Coming off that bad loss, the 49ers will need to regroup, especially since another loss in the division would be bad news.

This time, at home and with more time to jell, the Niners will have the upper hand against Sean McVay's guys.

Outcome: A typical division win.

Record: 9-4

Week 15 @ Chargers: Thursday, Dec. 17, 8:15 p.m. ET

The 49ers couldn't take over SoFi as a Rams' opponent, so the NFL will let them do it against the Chargers, albeit on a short week.

San Francisco hasn't seen Jim Harbaugh since his NFL return, and that will be cool to see, but who knows if this Chargers team has the juice to compete.

Outcome: 49ers win against the club's old coach.

Record: 10-4

Week 16 @ Chiefs: Sunday, Dec. 27, 4:25 p.m. ET

After the mini bye earned from the Thursday Night Football game, the 49ers' reward is... another road trip, this time to Kansas City to take on their nemesis, the Chiefs.

Say what you will about Seattle or the Rams, but this Chiefs club is the real bugaboo for Shanahan and crew.

Unfortunately, after a down year last season, Patrick Mahomes and his guys should be back up to full strength. This doesn't feel like the year to exorcise this particular demon.

Outcome: Kansas City in December = a cold, miserable loss

Record: 10-5

Week 17 vs. Eagles: Sunday, Jan. 3, 8:20 p.m. ET

This late-season Sunday Night Football matchup could be meaningful, either for seeding in the playoffs or even whether or not both teams make it at all.

It's been an up-and-down history between those two squads, but given the magnitude and the 49ers being at home, the home team will come out and get a big win.

Most importantly, Dre Greenlaw can reunite with his old buddy, Big Dom.

Outcome: 49ers flex their muscles and win in prime time

Record: 11-5

Week 18 @ Cardinals, Saturday, Jan. 9 OR Sunday, Jan. 10, TBD

As always, the NFL doesn't schedule the specifics of the final week until closer to the day (one solution: go Premier League style and have everyone play at the same time!), so we won't know when this will be until then.

But the 49ers are likely going to need this one, especially if the division is close or the playoffs are in question.

If that's the case, they should be able to take down Arizona again, even on the road.

Outcome: A season sweep of the Cardinals, and 3-3 in the division

Record: 12-5
