Kyle Shanahan's Brandon Aiyuk comments were as big a sidestep as could be

Well, that was anticlimactic.

For those thinking head coach Kyle Shanahan would finally shed some light on the seemingly never-ending saga between the San Francisco 49ers and disgruntled wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, sorry.

The coach spoke to reporters the Friday prior to hosting the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 9, and the presser was a little more abuzz than usual, given recent developments surrounding Aiyuk's decision to hire Drew Rosenhaus as an agent and to file paperwork to be reinstated after the Niners placed him on the reserve/left squad list a year ago.

Rosenhaus told several reporters just before Shanahan's presser that he and Aiyuk were en route to the team's headquarters, not far from the practice facility outside Levi's Stadium, but exactly how much Shanahan knew isn't clear.

Judging by the coach's comments about Aiyuk's situation, it's nearly impossible to tell.

Kyle Shanahan is as vague as can be about Brandon Aiyuk during Friday presser

Shanahan delivered the usual injury updates ahead of Week 9 before a long (and awkward) pause filled the room; all in attendance waiting for someone to break the ice about the Aiyuk drama—the proverbial elephant in the room.

Finally, when Aiyuk's name was brought up, Shanahan was blunt.

"No clue," Shanahan responded when asked what will happen between the receiver and San Francisco. "Your guess is as good as mine."

Then, when pressed about what he'd like to see happen between the two parties, Shanahan responded with, "I [couldn't] care less."

It's somewhat provocative, given Shanahan didn't exactly slam the door shut on a would-be salvaging of the seemingly destroyed relationship between player and franchise when asked about the same dilemma earlier in the week. Perhaps Shanahan quietly polled several of his players, who haven't been quite as coy about their sentiments toward Aiyuk at this point.

Separate from the coach's comments, Aiyuk's own situation is anything but resolved. For starters, he still has an active arrest warrant for speeding past Levi's Stadium last year. On top of that, the NFL hasn't officially reinstated the 2020 first-round draft pick, meaning the 49ers don't have to do anything, transactionally, just yet.

Plus, there's a reported $13 million in forfeiture Aiyuk apparently owes back to the Niners for violating the terms of his contract. That'll have to get resolved somehow, too.

How this all ends? Well, perhaps Shanahan's "no clue" comments are more accurate than we thought.
