San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has had a career year to this point. He's been one of, if not the main reason why his squad is 6-1 coming out of their bye week.
Already flirting with MVP honors, Purdy looks to continue his torrid pace, but his own general manager, John Lynch, might be getting in his way.
The GM pulled the trigger on defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, trading away a fourth-round pick to bring the veteran back to the Bay. But shortly after, it was rumored that the Niners were likely done with blockbuster moves as they approached the trade deadline.
49ers will continue to hurt Brock Purdy's MVP chances if they don't trade for another WR
If the 49ers sit idle until November 10th, they will be doing their franchise quarterback a disservice.
The team has already proven they don't have enough depth to withstand injuries and still maintain a competent offense. Before Week 7's loss to the Falcons, Brock Purdy was the favorite to win the MVP. He then turned the ball over twice and struggled to move the ball against the middling Atlanta defense. As a result, he is now a distant second to Josh Allen in the running.
The 49ers have reinforcements on the way. Both Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel will presumably return soon. However, Purdy will still be relying on a 33-year-old and a post-prime Samuel as his primary weapons. There is no guarantee the two will stay healthy the rest of the season.
Whether it's taking a high-upside swing like Brian Thomas Jr. or snagging an underrated depth piece like Josh Downs, providing Purdy with more weapons can only mean good things for his overall performance.
Brock Purdy has no more room for error after proving he needs healthy receiving options
After his undesirable performance in Atlanta, Purdy has no more room for error when it comes to hunting for decorations for his trophy case. He was the MVP frontrunner for a brief time because of his historic efficiency. He doesn't possess the eye-popping physical traits of Josh Allen or the spontaneous creativity of Patrick Mahomes (both of which are also in the top five of MVP odds).
It's not uncommon for a QB to benefit from skilled receivers, but when deciding which player is the league's most valuable, voters will likely be looking for a signal caller who rises above adversity.
Therefore, Purdy's Week 7 dud is a strike against him, and he cannot afford to give any more reason to doubt him. Elite efficiency from here on out will be a requirement, and he can only do that with weapons sufficient enough to not drop the ball (no pun intended).
Nevertheless, Brock Purdy is playing at an elite level, and fortifying his arsenal at the deadline is a must. Whether John Lynch decides to pull the trigger remains to be seen.
