While nothing is 'imminent,' John Lynch left the door open for the 49ers to make a move at the NFL trade deadline.
The San Francisco 49ers have been no strangers to making splash moves by the NFL trade deadline.
Back in 2019, then the Niners needed wide receiver help, they picked up veteran pass catcher Emmanuel Sanders from the Denver Broncos to help with a Super Bowl run. In 2022, they made another splash move by grabbing All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey from the Carolina Panthers.
Those are just some examples. With the 2024 trade deadline hitting on Nov. 5, one can fairly wonder if general manager John Lynch is aiming to pull off another deal, especially in light of the many injuries his team has suffered over the course of the first half of the season.
And with San Francisco aiming to get back to the Super Bowl in a win-now kind of mode.
According to Lynch, probably not. But maybe.
John Lynch on potential trades: 'Nothing's imminent' but door remains open
Speaking on KNBR 680's Murph & Markus Show (h/t 49ers Webzone) heading into the 49ers' Week 9 bye, Lynch offered some insight on where the team is at with regard to November's trade deadline.
In short, according to the general manager, nothing is in the works.
But Lynch didn't exactly say the Niners were standing idle either, which is consistent with the many "we'll always look for means to improve" comments he's made over the years.
"When you're looking at a trade deadline, we've taken advantage of it in a number of the years in which we've been here," Lynch said on the show. "It's been really good to us. It's just got to be a fit, and you're always calling and receiving calls."

Lynch also commented on how San Francisco is expecting back two of its key players from injury, linebacker Dre Greenlaw and All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey, who have yet to play a snap in 2024.
In a roundabout way, those two players' returns seem like second-half additions to a roster that has largely been inconsistent over the first eight weeks.
As for a trade, Lynch was non-committal one way or another.
"Nothing's imminent right now," Lynch continued. "I will tell everyone that. But if something does come together here, the trade deadline's on election day, interesting how they did that. But, if anything comes by then, that makes sense, it can make us a better football team, fits with our financial position, and all those things, then we'll certainly pull the trigger."
