John Lynch poured cold water on 49ers' hopes of pairing Nick Bosa with Joey Bosa

So much for that.

The San Francisco 49ers desperately need outside pass-rushers after finishing dead last in the league a year ago in sacks with just 20, and that need only became more apparent in the wake of edge Bryce Huff's stunning retirement at age 27.

Granted, the return of defensive ends Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams from ACL tears suffered last season will help, but it doesn't wholly eliminate the need for grabbing some help.

So, understandably and as was the case a year ago, the thought of grabbing the older Bosa brother, Joey Bosa, has gained plenty of traction ever since his 2025 employer, the Buffalo Bills, opted not to re-sign him following his lone season there.

Ironically enough, the Bosa brothers' matron, Cheryl Bosa, made no secret about where she'd like Joey to sign: with the Niners, posting as much on social media with the two brothers donning San Francisco jerseys.

Indeed, such a move would sell tickets even though the older Bosa isn't quite the premier pass-rusher he was during his heyday years with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Unfortunately for those 49ers fans hoping to see a Bosa-Bosa pass-rushing tandem this September, it doesn't sound like it'll come true.

John Lynch quiets all talk of a Joey Bosa-Nick Bosa pairing with 49ers

Speaking from the annual NFL meetings in Arizona over the weekend, Lynch was asked whether or not targeting Joey Bosa was something the Niners were seriously looking into.

The answer wasn't exactly positive.

"I know Mama Bosa would love that, but I don't know if we can afford him," Lynch responded as he chuckled with reporters.

According to Spotrac's market-value tool, Bosa is worth an annual salary of $13.7 million, which is about the ballpark range for a B-level pass-rusher.

Currently, San Francisco has $29 million in available cap space and figures to reserve approximately $7 million to sign its 2026 NFL Draft class later this summer, leaving $22 million on a projected top-51 list.

That's enough to sign Joey Bosa, of course. So, one has to wonder if Lynch knows something the media and fans don't.

Either way, it doesn't appear as if the 49ers are as entertained by the thought of a Bosa Bros. defensive line as much as fans are.
