John Lynch can still make 1 move to turn 49ers into true Super Bowl contenders

This could be the missing piece.

While it seems like the San Francisco 49ers are probably done making big moves this offseason, there is still one obvious move left to make by general manager John Lynch that could turn his team into a true Super Bowl contender.

Joey Bosa is still a free agent. While Lynch has poured cold water on the notion the Niners could sign Bosa this offseason, and has basically said Bosa is asking for too much money, at some point, Bosa is going to have to sign somewhere.

There probably isn’t any other team that makes more sense than San Francisco. His brother Nick Bosa plays for them, the Niners still need pass rush help, and they could be a legitimate contender if injuries go their way.

It truly does seem like money is the issue, but if it is, why are the Niners deciding to be cheap? Obviously they don’t want to overpay for Joey Bosa. He’s had plenty of injury troubles in his career, he’s 31 years old, and he’s coming off a decent but certainly not great season with the Buffalo Bills in which he played 15 games and recorded five sacks.

Still, San Francisco could use a veteran edge rusher, especially after Bryce Huff’s retirement. It seems like the 49ers plan to use rookie Romello Height as their third-down rusher, which could end up being a great decision, but obviously no one knows if Height’s game will translate to the NFL. The Niners have not had any luck drafting edge rushers outside of Nick Bosa, so their track record suggests they should get a backup plan.

Signing Joey Bosa would give San Francisco an ideal complement to his brother Nick on third-downs. Just imagine the Bosa brothers trying to get after the quarterback. That would be an absolute dream of a season after the Niners were having to rely on guys like Clelin Ferrell and Keion White to shoulder a lot of the pass rush.

Those are fine guys to have as depth pieces, but the 49ers clearly need more firepower on the defensive line. Joey Bosa would provide just that and could turn the Niners from a team that most consider likely to make the playoffs into a team poised to make a run at the Super Bowl.

A season after finishing dead last in the NFL in sacks, even though much of that had to do with injuries, there is really no reason for San Francisco to not exhaust every resource to ensure it's adequately equipped at edge rusher going into 2026.

Lynch can put the cherry on top of what has already been a solid offseason for San Francisco by signing Bosa.

Now it’s just a matter of whether he will actually do it.
