John Lynch's comments suggest 49ers may not splurge on a free-agent WR

Maybe they will just roll with the young guys...

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch spoke to the media last week and made some comments about the team's pursuit of wide receivers. While he left the door open for a lot of different options, one line stood out and suggests the Niners may not splurge on a big free agent.

Lynch acknowledged that several of their young receivers missed a lot of time in 2025. Ricky Pearsall was out for a good chunk of games due to a lingering knee issue, rookie Jordan Watkins was banged up since the preseason and did not see much action, and Jacob Cowing did not play at all as he dealt with injury. Lynch said the young guys, "really need to come to the forefront" next season.

While he also said that San Francisco is looking at potentially bringing players like Jauan Jennings back and will explore the free-agent market, there is still a very real chance it'll roll with a very young wide receiver room next season.

That's exciting, but it is also scary because inexperience can often lead to mistakes.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan demands a lot from his young receivers which is why guys like Dante Pettis and Brandon Aiyuk have ended up in his doghouse over the years.

But Lynch's comments do not suggest the 49ers are going to go out and get three established receivers in free agency. Realistically, they may try to get one affordable receiver in free agency, hope Pearsall can stay healthy for a full season, draft a receiver in April, and hope that the likes of Cowing, Watkins, and Demarcus Robinson can fill in the gaps as needed.

It's not the worst plan, given financial realities, but it may disappoint some fans who feel San Francisco has to get a lot more dynamic at wide receiver if it wants to compete with teams like the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawls, who have two of the best receivers in the game, respectively, in Puka Nacua and Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

Maybe the Niners will surprise us all and sign a premier name like Mike Evans, but it seems more likely that Lynch will opt for a slightly more aggressive offseason than last year while still leaning on the young guys.

It may not be the most thrilling strategy, but there is a chance that it will be the most prudent one.
