John Lynch claps back at Mike Florio suggesting 49ers trade Kyle Shanahan
By Peter Panacy
John Lynch had some notable words for Mike Florio after the latter suggested the 49ers could trade Kyle Shanahan elsewhere.
In some regards, the context does exist where the San Francisco 49ers could trade their head coach, Kyle Shanahan, to a team in need of an offensive mastermind.
That context includes a prior history of trying to attempt such a move, namely back in 2014 when the Niners' top brass were looking to trade then-head coach Jim Harbaugh despite a successful three-year run, previously.
Such context would also include a team in dire need of a good head coach, such as the Chicago Bears, who want someone to develop quarterback Caleb Williams and fully unlock the offense.
Plus, tack on San Francisco's own struggles throughout 2024, and that's where Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio made a rather provocative suggestion the 49ers be open to trading Shanahan to Chicago.
"[The Bears] should make the inquiry as to 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan," Florio wrote earlier this week. "There’s no obvious reason to think he or the team would like a fresh start. From his perspective, it’s fruitless; he’s under contract. From the team’s perspective, who really ever knows?"
Sure, Chicago might be inclined to simply ask, but why would the Niners do it?
It might be easy criticizing Shanahan after what's been a wholly lackluster season in the wake of Super Bowl aspirations.
But, when looking at the full body of work, such a trade seems ludicrous from San Francisco's vantage point.
And general manager John Lynch feels the same way.
John Lynch calls Kyle Shanahan trade suggestion 'comical'
During his regular Friday appearance on the 49ers' flagship station, KNBR 680 in the Bay Area, the Niners' GM was asked about would-be trade proposals involving Shanahan.
Not surprisingly, Lynch dismissed them, citing Shanahan's full body of work in recent years:
"I've found the whole discussion on Kyle rather comical. We've won four of the last five division championships and been in two Super Bowls. The standard here is to win (Super Bowls) and we've fallen short I understand that.
But we have an excellent head coach and the fact people are talking about that I do find it comical."
You can listen to Lynch's full interview on KNBR below:
True, this isn't the first time Florio has prompted some wild talk about San Francisco. Although, in his defense, the PFT host was leaning more toward the Bears asking rather than the 49ers actively trying to shop their head coach.
Either way, Lynch isn't subscribing to any of it.
