Jauan Jennings should be disappointed with latest 49ers reunion rumor

So much for that.

Week 7's loss to the Atlanta Falcons revealed just how acute the San Francisco 49ers' current wide receiver shortage is, particularly in light of both Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel missing time with injuries.

This prompted no shortage of speculation about the Niners reaching out to the Minnesota Vikings about wide receiver Jauan Jennings' availability, especially in light of his relative non-use in head coach Kevin O'Connell's offense over the first few weeks.

And there've been visible signs of the veteran receiver's frustrations, too.

Indeed, Jennings has been scantly used, recording just four catches for 43 yards over five games. That stands in stark contrast to the career-best 975 yards he had with San Francisco back in 2024 amid yet another receiver shortage.

So, why wouldn't the 49ers inquire about a trade for Jennings on the cheap? The Niners could get some much-needed receiver help, while Minnesota would clear a roster spot and get a draft asset in return. Jennings would likely be happy about the move, returning to a system where he's had plenty of success.

Don't count on it, though. At least that's the take from one prominent NFL insider.

Tom Pelissero doubts Vikings would trade Jauan Jennings to 49ers

Former NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, now working for Athlon Sports, shared his thoughts about a would-be Jennings reunion back to the Bay Area.

Pelissero's take? It's not going to happen.

"I would think the 49ers will turn their attention to stopping the revolving door at receiver," Pelissero shared. "I don’t see a Jauan Jennings reunion being an option at this time."

There's logic to that stance. For starters, why would an undefeated Vikings team trade away assets to a fellow conference contender vying to usurp them in the standings? Despite Jennings' lack of use now, Minnesota may encounter the same shortages at receiver the Niners are going through and could look to him as a contingency option.

Additionally, the Niners are expecting both Evans and Samuel back soon, and other wideouts like Demarcus Robinson and De'Zhaun Stribling are also poised to return at some point after the bye in Week 8.

Instead, San Francisco is likely banking on getting healthy first, plugging the holes with depth options and practice squad call-ups rather than trading for a player like Jennings.

For now, as it seems, Jennings will have to deal with his current situation as it is.

As fun as it might've seemed to engineer yet another reunion, the thought of acquring Jennings probably stays as just that: a thought.

That might be just as disappointing for Jennings as it would be for 49ers fans hoping he'd come back.
