Jauan Jennings-49ers scuttlebutt makes even more sense after WR's sideline tirade

It's pretty evident wide receiver Jauan Jennings is regretting his offseason decision to leave the San Francisco 49ers via free agency and join the Minnesota Vikings.

Yes, the Norsemen are 5-0, holding an identical record as the also-undefeated Niners.

Unfortunately for Jennings, he's not exactly part of the winning equation. Despite Minnesota's red-hot start, the quarterbacking combination of Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz simply hasn't looked at the big-bodied receiver as a go-to target.

If anything, they're not looking at him much at all. Over five games, Jennings' stat line is as follows: two catches on five targets for 9 yards.

That's it.

No wonder Jennings showed serious frustration on the sideline during the Vikings' Week 5 win over the New Orleans Saints:

Understandably, Jennings isn't even close to sniffing the kind of role he likely envisioned for himself when heading to Minnesota last summer.

But, hey... San Francisco could change all that.

A 49ers trade for Jauan Jennings makes more sense now than ever before

Having originally joined the 49ers back in 2020, Jennings understands what it was like to be a tertiary receiver on the Niners depth chart, frequently overshadowed by better-established pass catchers like Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk.

Five weeks into the season, San Francisco's only healthy established wideout is Mike Evans, and he's coming off a ribs injury. Samuel is poised to miss a few weeks with a hamstring issue, and the 49ers' crop of reserves—De'Zhaun Stribling (ankle), Christian Kirk (hamstring) and Demarcus Robinson (ankle)—aren't poised to return imminently either.

Simply put, the Niners need a receiver. Badly.

So, that lays the groundwork for why NFL Network's Ian Rapoport speculated San Francisco could aim to pursue Jennings after his (likely) brief foray into the NFC North:

"He's with the Minnesota Vikings, had like two catches," Rapoport said. "Obviously, came over from the 49ers. I expect his name to heat up a little bit over the next, probably, couple of days and weeks."

It's clear Jennings doesn't fit within what head coach Kevin O'Connell and the Vikings are trying to do, and the receiver's latest sideline tirade is perfect evidence of the frustration.

Should the Niners aim to trade with Minnesota for the disgruntled wideout, it'd likely cost awfully little, potentially a seventh-round draft pick. The Vikings would be getting something for a player who's doing almost nothing for them to date, while San Francisco would reunite with someone who has shown plenty of prowess within its offense.

It's a win for Minnesota. It's a win for the 49ers.

And it'd be a massive win for the two-catch Jennings, too.
