As the San Francisco 49ers deal with their own kicker issues, an old friend (or maybe frenemy) has reemerged.

Jake Moody may be thrust into the spotlight for the Baltimore Ravens as Tyler Loop is reportedly likely to be placed on injured reserve.

Moody was signed to Baltimore's practice squad after the Washington Commanders cut him, and with Baltimore set to play on Thursday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Loop has less time to get healthy, so it seems Moody will have to go.

It's easy to forget that Moody was actually with the Niners at the start of last season, but he was so bad in Week 1 that they finally cut him and picked up Eddy Piñeiro who was largely excellent in 2025.

Moody went to the Chicago Bears and had some success, making eight of his nine attempts but was let go after Cairo Santos returned from injury. The Commanders picked him up next, which was not a huge shock since Washington general manager Adam Peters loves picking up former Niners.

The 2023 third-round draftee was solid with Washington last season as he made 10 of his 11 field-goal attempts, and it seemed like maybe he had found a new permanent home, but he struggled in training camp which got him cut.

49ers' kicking woes force uncomfortable Jake Moody recollection

Sadly, the 49ers can't point and laugh at the Ravens for having to roll with Moody because they are having their own kicker issues. While Piñeiro was great in 2025 and earned himself a nice payday in the offseason, he has struggled in 2026, as he has made only six of his nine field-goal attempts and has missed four extra-point attempts thus far.

General manager John Lynch said San Francisco would not hold kicker tryouts, so it seems the 49ers are going to trust Piñeiro for now. But if he keeps on missing kicks, then San Francisco may have no choice but to entertain a change.

Perhaps Piñeiro needed the bye week to clear his head a bit and can get back on track starting in Week 9. Kickers are such a fickle breed and can look phenomenal one season and completely lost the next, as it's such a mental thing for them. So, affirming confidence in him is probably the best way to get a rebound.

Moody will always be something of a boogeyman for the Niners, so it's hard not to follow all of his ups and downs.

But sadly, just because Moody is gone doesn't mean San Francisco is now immune to kicker troubles.
