San Francisco 49ers fans have to be relieved that they no longer have to hold their breath during every field goal attempt. After countless disappointments, kicker Jake Moody has since been booted out of the Bay. This season, the Washington Commanders have signed up to be Moody's new home, and it is already going as one would suspect.
It’s just training camp, but Moody reportedly missed four consecutive field goals during Commanders practice on Monday. Not only that, but their other kicker in camp, Drew Stevens, missed three straight attempts. Seems Adam Peters may be looking for a new kicker soon. Does Brandon Aiyuk have any experience as a placekicker by chance?
A year ago, arguably the biggest camp battle the San Francisco 49ers had was between kickers Jake Moody and Greg Joseph. Moody’s job was far from secure after a very shaky 2024 campaign, but the Niners decided to roll with him anyway.
That experiment didn't last long, as he had a terrible game in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks, and the Niners subsequently cut him. Replacement Eddy Piñeiro was up for the task, making 28 of his 29 field goal attempts. He signed a multi-year contract to stay with the Niners, providing some much-needed stability to the position.
Moody has seemed to find some stability after 49ers' tenure... for now
Moody actually didn’t do too terribly after the Niners cut him last year. He made eight of nine field goal attempts in a two-game stint with the Chicago Bears, when he had to fill in for the injured Cairo Santos. After the Commanders scooped him up later in the year, he made 10 of his 11 attempts.
Kickers can be incredibly streaky, though. If Moody looks like he has lost whatever he seemingly found last year, the Commanders may move on from him. Such is the life of an NFL kicker, though.
It will be interesting to see if they stick with Moody, at least until they head into Levi's Stadium for a bout with the 49ers. One can only imagine that the boo-birds will be out in full force whenever he attempts a field goal or extra point after his tumultuous tenure in Santa Clara.
Niners fans can only breathe a sigh of relief knowing that the Moody era is behind them. It was a breath of fresh air when Piñeiro became the guy. As for Washington... all the 49er faithful can say is, "Good Luck."
