The San Francisco 49ers are busy enjoying their best quarterback play in ages in 2026. Brock Purdy has reached new heights and has cemented himself firmly in the MVP conversation.
The Baltimore Ravens, on the other hand, can't say the same. They were decimated by injury in Week 8 when all three of their quarterbacks got hurt. Both Lamar Jackson and backup Tyler Huntley suffered injuries that will likely cost them the season, and Fagnano hurt his right ankle and will be hindered on Thursday Night Football.
Baltimore was rumored to be pursuing Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett and confirmed suspicions by making the deal official Wednesday. But that didn't stop them from also having former 49ers quarterback Adrian Martinez in for a workout this week.
If the that name doesn't ring a bell, fans shouldn't feel bad. He signed to the Niners' practice squad before making the active roster in 2025. He recorded just one snap all season: a kneel-down for minus one yard.
Ravens only need to give 49ers a call to get the scoop on Adrian Martinez
Martinez was given an extended opportunity to prove his worth in the preseason but was beaten out by Kurtis Rourke for third-string duties. By the third prep week, he played virtually the entire game, save for Mac Jones' five pass attempts. At that point, the depth chart was essentially solidified, and Martinez was given the game to prove his worth to other potential suitors following his inevitable exodus.
The former Nebraska quarterback was easily the least efficient QB of the preseason, excluding Mac Jones, who had already secured his second-string duties thanks to his gutsy efforts last season in the absence of Brock Purdy.
Martinez' 52.9 percent completion percentage and 60.0 rating left much to be desired, and it's apparently taken eight weeks and a franchise in desperation for him to receive another opportunity. While the Ravens haven't made any sort of firm commitment on the free agent, it's a step in the right direction for someone whose career looked about finished after the 49ers waived him.
Whether or not Adrian Martinez can find another home remains to be seen. If he doesn't land with the Ravens, he will be hard-pressed to find another opportunity as ideal as the one currently in front of him. Brissett likely won't be ready to play in such a quick turnaround, and Baltimore will just be happy if they can field one or two healthy bodies under center for their upcoming Thursday night contest against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
