Don't get your hopes up this will get squared away soon.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport echoed John Lynch's recent comments about Brock Purdy's ongoing extension talks with the 49ers.

One of the more positive developments between quarterback Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers was when the signal-caller showed up for the opening day of team offseason workouts.

This hinted at a potential extension being finalized in the not-so-distant future, namely because Purdy didn't have to attend the voluntary workouts, and few would have questioned his motivation for staying away while he awaits what'll be a lucrative contract extension that could pay him north of $50 million per year.

However, in the immediate aftermath of the 2025 NFL Draft, general manager John Lynch pumped the breaks on such hopes, saying that discussions were positive and ongoing but that nothing appeared to be imminent.

"When it gets done, I’m not sure," Lynch told NBC Sports analyst Chris Simms. "Hope sooner rather than later, but hope is not a strategy. So, we’re making progress."

This could simply be GM-speak, an attempt to curb any enthusiasm about a deal being finalized soon.

However, a prominent NFL insider effectively repeated what Lynch had to say, casting a shadow on the timeliness of Purdy's extension.

Ian Rapoport doesn't expect Brock Purdy extension to get done soon

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport appeared on The Pat McAfee Show recently and shed light on what he's hearing between Purdy and the Niners.

Rapoport's response wasn't far off from what Lynch said, previously.

"I've not gotten the sense that it'll get done soon," Rapoport told McAfee. "But it does at least seem like it's going in the right direction."

The well-connected insider contrasted Purdy's pending deal with the completed extension San Francisco just executed with star tight end George Kittle, pointing out how "quarterback deals usually take longer."

There are a few key dates to monitor with regard to Purdy's talks and offseason workouts, particularly the start of organized team activities (OTAs) on May 27 and then mandatory minicamp on June 10.

Purdy's attendance (or non-attendance) for either could signify a lot, especially if talks ultimately drag into training camp in late July.

"But it seems like it's positive and headed in the right direction," Rapoport concluded.

At least both parties have that sentiment going for them even if no resolution is apparently in sight.
