While an extension doesn't appear imminent, at least there are positive signs of progress between Brock Purdy and the 49ers.
Of note, tight end George Kittle opted not to attend, although the reaction to that shouldn't be too extreme, given the fact these workouts are fully voluntary.
However, as first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter, quarterback Brock Purdy is showing up to participate despite he and the Niners being fully immersed in a difficult-to-navigate contract-extension discussion that has dominated the entire offseason.
49ers QB Brock Purdy, who has been discussing a new deal with San Francisco, is in attendance today for the start of the team’s off-season workout program. Some thought Purdy might have stayed away without a new deal, but that’s not the route Purdy chose. pic.twitter.com/uKiEJISTw0

At the conclusion of the 2024 season, Purdy stressed his desire to have no drama surrounding his extension talks, which could potentially see the signal-caller earn more than $50 million per year once finalized.
But, the longer extension talks go on, the more challenging San Francisco's vantage point could get, especially if it's holding up deals for other players like Kittle.
However, Purdy's decision to report to offseason workouts is encouraging news.
Insiders share how Brock Purdy attending 49ers OTAs is a good thing
A week ago, NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco reported that offers had gone back and forth between the two parties, yet nothing appeared to be imminent.
At the start of workouts, The Athletic's Dianna Russini followed up on a comment from fellow Athletic insider Mike Silver about how Purdy's attendance didn't necessarily mean an extension was close, but it was a good sign that talks were progressing:
With Brock Purdy showing up to the start of 49ers OTAs Tuesday, contract talks between San Francisco and its QB are in a good place.

As @MikeSilver noted yesterday, Purdy’s attendance signals that a deal isn’t done, but talks are moving in a positive direction. pic.twitter.com/ET4eQJRs0K
What exactly this means on the negotiation front is anyone's guess. It's possible the two sides have agreed on a max value, but there could be some impasses regarding guaranteed money, incentives and the overall length of contract.
The 49ers have declared how much they want Purdy in a Niners uniform for a long time, and there should be motivation to finalize things, especially if it'll free up the front office to look into extensions for others like Kittle.
If Purdy opted not to attend workouts, it might have been seen as a much bigger impasse.
Thankfully, that's not the case.
