The San Francisco 49ers have actually been quite lucky in this NFL Draft, but that luck ran out early on Sunday's Day 3.
After the board fell nicely for them to pick defensive linemen Mykel Williams and Alfred Collins in the NFL Draft's first two rounds, the team can't have too many complaints, but an early pick on Day 3 might have caused some teeth-gnashing in the 49ers draft war room.
The New York Giants selected Arizona State running back Cam Skattebo with the 105th pick, the third in the fourth round.
This likely hurt the Niners for multiple reasons.
Firstly, we know the team likes a running back pick in the middle rounds: think previous selections of the likes of Isaac Guerendo, Trey Sermon, and Tyrion Davis-Price (let's not talk about Joe Williams) as good examples.
Oftentimes, though, that's come when the 49ers didn't necessarily have a screaming need at the position, which has led to criticism.
That wouldn't have happened this year. San Francisco needs some insurance behind all-world runner Christian McCaffrey, particularly with Jordan Mason's departure via trade earlier in the offseason. As it stands, the neophyte Guerendo and unproven Patrick Taylor are the only running backs with any NFL experience behind McCaffrey.
What hurts more, though, is that Skattebo would've fit perfectly in the 49ers' zone scheme. He's fast, decisive, and explosive.
In that sense, he profiles similarly to Guerendo, only he's a much more seasoned college player and a better receiver out of college to boot.
It would've been a fun weapon to add to head coach Kyle Shanahan's arsenal, but unfortunately, the G-Men made sure that won't be the case.
With an all-defensive draft so far, all eyes will be on general manager John Lynch as to whether he will add some offensive weapons on Day 3.
Skattebo would've been a nice addition in that sense, too, but the 49ers will now have to reset their board and get ready to make their first pick imminently.
