The San Francisco 49ers are reportedly still in aggression mode ahead of the NFL trade deadline. They added DeForest Buckner, but there are still holes to fill at edge rusher and wide receiver. Dallas Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens has had his name bandied about in trade speculation, but a deal between the historied NFC rivals seems unlikely.
While the Cowboys are 3-5 on the season, they are still in the playoff hunt in a comically bad NFC East. The New York Giants are at 4-2-1 but have already lost their starting quarterback for the season. The division is far from wrapped up with half of the season left to go.
Unless Dallas suffers an embarrassing loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, the Cowboys likely won't be in a selling mood. Jerry Jones' ego might not even allow that if the Cowboys were having a season like the Los Angeles Chargers, but the fact that Dallas is still in the mix means there is no incentive to trade Pickens.
Even if he is playing on a franchise tag and hasn't gotten as many targets recently, it's a fairly safe bet to think that he will be wearing Cowboy blue until the season's end.
Cowboys and 49ers simply don't make for good trade partners
Then there's also the fact that the Cowboys probably wouldn't want to trade Pickens to an NFC contender like San Francisco.
Though the teams have dealt with one another a few times in recent times, no love has been lost on either side. Trey Lance got shipped to Dallas, Osa Odighizuwa went the other direction to San Francisco, and Dee Winters got traded to the Cowboys. But it would be odd for the Cowboys to gift the Niners one of their best receivers to aid them in their quest for the conference's top seed.
The 49ers could surely make a player like Pickens fit in on offense, but San Francisco arguably needs more depth pieces rather than one big splash. A guy like Keenan Allen makes a ton of sense since he is a cheap veteran who wouldn't outshine Deebo Samuel or Mike Evans.
This is trade season, and speculation is naturally going to run rampant. Any wide receiver who has even a whiff of trade buzz surrounding them is going to be seen as a potential fit for the 49ers. But when it comes to Pickens, it just doesn't make sense for either side. Expect the Niners to think a bit smaller if they do add a wide receiver, which is not even a guarantee with the players who are set to return from injury soon.
