George Kittle technically returned to the San Francisco 49ers in Week 1, but he didn't truly look like he was back until Week 2's contest against the Miami Dolphins. Just because he was in the lineup and on the field for the game in Melbourne doesn't mean he had fully returned to form yet, and his numbers back that up.
In Week 1, Kittle had only two receptions on five targets, totaling only 12 yards. It was a far cry from the performance Niners' fans have come to expect from their star tight end. But to follow it up, once he was firmly back in Levi's Stadium, Kittle posted a perfect four receptions on four targets, and he put them all together for 80 yards and a touchdown.
It truly felt like a return to grace after the devastating Achilles injury that kept him sidelined for the most important games of the 2025 season: the playoffs.
George Kittle is already easing 49ers’ biggest post-injury concern
At 32 years old, Kittle isn't exactly among the younger portion of the NFL. An severe injury like Kittle's is not something easily overcome at any age, and it's particularly difficult after several other injuries limited him to only 11 games in the 2025 regular season. When Kittle went down in the Wild Card game against the Philadelphia Eagles, the questions weren't whether or not Kittle had the willpower to emerge from the other side. The questions were whether or not Kittle would emerge from the other side a different player.
It's a justified question. An Achilles injury at his age could derail any unlucky player's career. But Kittle came back, needed a little time to get his bearings, and showed the NFL world that he's still got it.
Taking a closer look at the 49ers' win over the Dolphins shows exactly that. In the third quarter, Brock Purdy found Kittle in space, and Kittle then managed to turn it into a 40-yard gain. That carried the drive. Only four plays later, Purdy again connected with Kittle, this time in the end zone for the touchdown:

If that's not a clear display of the magic still at work, I don't know what is.
In addition to an excellent performance on the day, Kittle's third catch also happened to be his 600th career grab. It takes a lot of experience to get that far in the receiving game, particularly as a tight end.
But the NFL isn't a sprint, it's a marathon. It's the endurance that really counts when every single week starts a new cycle. Kittle's age and injury history is against him, but that doesn't mean he's not still the same player he's always been.
With a few more performances like that, Kittle will be well on his way to stitching together another season on an already impressive resume.
