The San Francisco 49ers found themselves at the bottom of the NFC West last season, finishing the year with a 6-11 record. As a team that’s considered a perennial contender, a year like last season is unacceptable, even if injuries played a significant role. The Niners are committed to getting back on track in 2025, and that’s why they made several moves in the offseason.

However, not every offseason addition will make it to the regular season.

When San Francisco returns to training camp, the team will be allowed a maximum of 90 players. That number will have to eventually be cut down to 53 before the regular season, though. That means some newcomers could see their time with the team quickly end.

One of those newcomers is veteran wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins. The wideout signed with San Francisco in January, but the moves the 49ers have made since then could force Hodgins out.

Isaiah Hodgins will enter 49ers training camp on roster bubble

Hodgins has been in the NFL since 2020, when he was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the sixth round. Injuries limited him in his rookie season, and he spent most of the next two years on Buffalo’s practice squad. He eventually made his way to the New York Giants, playing with them for two and a half seasons. Between the Bills and Giants, Hodgins played in 31 games, catching 60 passes for 634 yards and seven touchdowns.

He’s now in San Francisco, hoping to carve out a role for himself. While the 49ers did say goodbye to Deebo Samuel this offseason, they are set to welcome Brandon Aiyuk back into the lineup. The team also signed Demarcus Robinson, and drafted wide receivers Jordan Watkins and Junior Bergen.

With other receivers Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall also returning, it will be an uphill battle for Hodgins to make the roster.
