If anyone was wondering what team San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk wants to go to when he is released, one need only look at his social media in which he is wearing Washington Commanders hats and making it very clear that’s where he’d like to play.
Veteran wide receiver Deebo Samuel reportedly had some interest in returning to the Commanders, but he returned to San Francisco instead, which really blows a hole in Aiyuk's argument that the Niners have mistreated him.
Dre Greenlaw returned as well during the offseason after one year away, so it seems pretty clear the issue is not with San Francisco's culture and is instead with Aiyuk.
The Niners now have a veteran receiver in Samuel who proved he is still an effective player last year in Washington. He’s a far cry from the two-way super threat he was at his peak in San Francisco, but it would be unfair to say he is completely washed up either. He had over 700 receiving yards and six touchdowns for the Commanders.
Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk handled themselves in completely different ways
Samuel’s social media presence was markedly different from Aiyuk’s this offseason. He didn't take shots at anyone, instead he appears to be in good shape and looks like he could be a solid contributor, based on videos of him running routes.
Meanwhile, Aiyuk is taking cheap shots at 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan for his car accident.
Aiyuk can talk about how badly he wants to go to the Commanders, but it doesn’t seem like Washington wants much of anything to do with him. Maybe it'd force him to deactivate his social media as part of any contract agreement, but it’s doubtful his ego would be OK with that.
It is fitting that Samuel is now back with the Niners. He left on good terms, unlike Aiyuk, which made a reunion even possible and shows that Aiyuk was clearly the bad egg, even if he did learn some of his antics from Samuel's contract extension negotiations.
It’s crazy to think that just a few years ago, Samuel and Aiyuk constituted one of the more formidable one-two wide receiver punches in the game, and now Samuel is back with the Niners, while it wouldn't shock anyone if Aiyuk gets cut and no team is willing to sign him.
That just shows that Deebo went about things the right way and Aiyuk went about things very much the wrong way.
