The San Francisco 49ers didn't have to worry whether or not their Week 16 Monday Night Football showdown against the Indianapolis Colts would result in a playoff berth. No, the Niners already knew they were in the previous day after the Pittsburgh Steelers upended the Detroit Lions.
But, to close out the week, quarterback Brock Purdy and Co. still had eyes on winning out, which would not only secure San Francisco the NFC West but also clinch the No. 1 seed in the conference playoff picture.
That effort started in primetime, though. And with a unretired and resurgent quarterback, Philip Rivers, and potential Offensive Player of the Year in Colts running back Jonathan Taylor looming, Purdy understood the 49ers offense might have to carry the night.
Well, safe to say it did in the Niners' 48-27 victory at Lucas Oil Stadium.
An injury absence to wide receiver Ricky Pearsall didn't inhibit Purdy's efforts to connect with his pass catchers, dishing out 295 yards through the air on 25 completions. Two of the primary beneficiaries behind Pearsall's absence were wide receivers Kendrick Bourne and Demarcus Robinson, who hauled in his first touchdown with the Niners:

But those two fringe offensive players didn't carry the story of Monday night.
Instead, it was the usual cast of characters at Purdy's disposal.
Brock Purdy electrifies 49ers offense with dominant outing vs. Colts
In total, Purdy tossed five touchdowns on the night against a late interception, finishing with an impressive 126.8 passer rating, which was plenty good enough to offset Rivers, who certainly commanded NFL respect at 44 years old and not having played prior to Week 15's Indy showdown since the 2020 season.
Yet Rivers and Taylor were wholly outclassed by Purdy, who didn't mind targeting tight end George Kittle to the tune of a team-best 115 yards while also granting the All-Pro a touchdown.
However, it was running back Christian McCaffrey who provided plenty of supporting-cast thump to Purdy, rushing for his third 100-yard game of the season while also hauling in 29 yards through the air with two of his quarterback's passing scores, getting one portion of a second 1,000/1,000 club appearance.

It'll be interesting to see how much Purdy and the Niners try feeding McCaffrey through the air over the final two games of the regular season, but that's a problem for another week.
Instead, San Francisco will relish its 11th victory and the improved hold on a playoff berth with the top seed very much in sight.
Arguably more importanly, Purdy is getting hot at precisely the right time.
