Brock Purdy might lead the NFL in passing (and not for the reason you think)

The San Francisco 49ers' quarterback, Brock Purdy, has been a revelation, going from Mr. Irrelevant to franchise cornerstone in a short period of time.

Now, 2026 might be his best season yet.

Purdy might be in line to put up gaudy numbers this season. He has a brand new weapon in Mike Evans, along with other retooled pieces of the offense. However, these might not be the main reasons why he winds up among the league leaders in passing. An elite statistical season by Purdy might be due to a catastrophic collapse by the defense.

It's not unheard of for quarterbacks of losing teams to light up the stat sheet. Last year, two of the top five quarterbacks in passing yards were on teams whose defenses allowed at least 24.0 points per game. The year before, Joe Burrow led the league with an outlandish 4,918 passing yards. His Bengals allowed 25.5 points per game, good for seventh-worst in the league.

Early 49ers defensive projections don't bode well

Unfortunately, the Niners are positioning themselves early to continue this trend. Their secondary has been viewed as a bottom-10 unit in the league, and ESPN has already tagged their interior defensive line as the team's main weakness heading into 2026.

With that being said, it seems like the 49ers will be relying all too heavily on pass-rusher Nick Bosa and their linebacking core to cover up the massive holes elsewhere on the field. With Bosa recovering from his second torn ACL, and star Fred Warner coming back from a gruesome ankle fracture, the plan seems risky, at best.

If this defense performs in underwhelming fashion, much of the burden will be placed on Purdy and the rest of the offense, which is looking surprisingly good early. Mike Evans is looking every bit the alpha he was brought in to be, and George Kittle's rehab is progressing ahead of schedule.

With that being said, game script might not be in this offense's favor often. If that is the case, Purdy will be forced to throw the ball more often than he is accustomed to. He has already passed for over 4,000 yards in a season in which the 49ers allowed the third-least points per game. It's anybody's guess as to how many yards he can rack up when he needs to throw the ball 35 times each week.

Hopefully, San Francisco can find some hidden gems on defense and alleviate some of the projected burden that may be placed on the offense. Because of this precarious situation, Niner fans will likely be hoping Purdy doesn't lead the league in passing yards, as the team's overall record may not reflect that individual success.
