San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy delivered a stellar performance against the Miami Dolphins in Week 2. It was a brilliant second act to start his fifth season in the Bay. Before that, Purdy performed expertly against the Los Angeles Rams during the NFL's first-ever game held in Australia.
Amid the 49ers' 2-0 start to the season, they've already amassed 62 points. Purdy's already thrown for five touchdowns and just under 500 yards, and he's rushed for 59 yards and another touchdown. Any franchise would be ecstatic about their quarterback starting out the season this way.
But does Purdy's performance warrant the MVP conversation?

The MVP is historically a quarterback award, with Adrian Peterson being the last non-quarterback to win the award back in 2012. Since then, it's been a long list of extremely recognizable signal callers, many of whom Purdy has been going toe-to-toe against since he arrived in the NFL.
The numbers don't lie, and Purdy's metrics are currently looking good enough to stand with the best. As of Monday, Purdy has the ninth-most passing yards with 492. He's tied with Josh Allen, Jalen Hurts, and Patrick Mahomes for the second-most passing touchdowns this season with five, and he is one of the only quarterbacks yet to take a sack.
Purdy's efficiency, however, might be what sets him apart. It's true that he doesn't have the biggest sample size, but through two games and 56 passing attempts, he's completed 45 of them. That's an incredible 80.4% completion rate. With other prominent quarterbacks like Jordan Love hovering just over 52%, Purdy's stock in the early MVP race appears to be solid.

In Week 1 against the Rams, there were a multitude of factors at play that contributed to the outcome. It's been well documented that the 49ers made the right choice in their travel plans, and it may have made all the difference for Purdy. The defense may not have been at 100% against him, but Purdy played exemplary football.
Week 2 featured an opponent in the early stages of a rebuild, but that also shouldn't put any stains on Purdy's solid showing. Again, his completion percentage shined through as his strength, completing 20 of 22 attempts.
Two weeks will never be enough to crown an MVP, but they are enough to identify the players who deserve to enter the conversation. If Purdy continues producing this efficiently while the 49ers keep winning, his candidacy will be impossible to dismiss.
