A wave of training camp injuries can't distract from the urgent goal the San Francisco 49ers carry into the 2026 season. Nearing the end of its championship window, this team has to push for a Super Bowl. Many of its current stars are nearing the end of their careers, making a postseason run more pressing than ever.
On an accelerated timeline, general manager John Lynch may be willing to be a bit more aggressive in the trade market.
That's why ESPN's proposed trade—sending Atlanta Falcons safety Jessie Bates III to the 49ers—isn't such a crazy idea.
San Francisco defensive coordinator Raheem Morris would certainly be a fan of the move, as he spent three seasons with Bates in Atlanta.
ESPN's 49ers trade idea brings Jessie Bates III to San Francisco
ESPN's Seth Walder recently released an article with five major trades during training camp. He proposed a deal that would send a 2027 third-round pick to the Falcons in exchange for Bates and a 2028 sixth-round pick.
Walder said, "It just so happens that former Falcons head coach Raheem Morris, who coached Bates the past two seasons, is now the 49ers' defensive coordinator. And he could use an upgrade at safety alongside Ji'Ayir Brown and Malik Mustapha. The timing works, as the 49ers are contenders who could use defensive help after ranking 25th in EPA allowed per dropback last season."
Brown and Mustapha already form a solid safety tandem for the Niners. They combined for three interceptions, three pass breakups, and over 150 tackles last season.
But even as he approaches 30 years old, Bates would provide a major upgrade for San Francisco. The former All-Pro safety has logged at least three interceptions in every season of his career. He had 13 interceptions across three seasons with Morris in Atlanta. Bates is the true single-high safety that the 49ers lack in the current construction of their defense.
Adding Bates to the fold wouldn't remove Mustapha or Brown from the defense entirely. Brown played over half of his snaps last season in either the slot or the box. He would still see plenty of the field in those positions, especially in dime packages. Bates would allow Morris the flexibility to move his other safeties around the field without sacrificing coverage over the top.
The veteran could be the missing piece Morris needs to transform this defense into a top-10 unit.
