The San Francisco 49ers just can't catch a break this offseason, as usual. Between Kyle Shanahan's serious car accident before training camp, George Kittle's Week 1 return unlikely to materialize, and several key fixtures already missing time, it's been a brutal start to the 2026 NFL season.
Oh, and there's the Ricky Pearsall injury situation, which was seemingly scary enough that bringing back old friend Deebo Samuel was deemed necessary. And while fans held out hope that Pearsall would eventually turn the corner with his PCL recovery, it appears that he has not.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Pearsall is undergoing season-ending surgery on his knee. After it hampered him last season and things clearly weren't right this offseason, the 49ers and the young player felt that this was the best course of action for the long term.
But what another devastating blow. This is the news that fans have feared for Pearsall.

It seemed like the writing was on the wall for Pearsall to at least miss some significant time when Samuel was signed by San Francisco, but the third-year pro sitting out the entire year is a gut punch for Shanahan and the offense.
With he-who-shall-not-be-named obviously not playing and Christian Kirk sidelined early in training camp, the 49ers are hoping that Mike Evans and Samuel have enough in the tank, and polarizing pick De'Zhaun Stribling can prove a lot of people wrong as a rookie.
Pearsall has shown so much promise in his 20-game sample with the 49ers, but the concerns from the fact that he'll have only played 20 games in three NFL seasons far outweigh whatever glimpses he has shown while on the field.
Injuries are an unfortunate part of life in the NFL, but major ones to key players feel like a foregone conclusion in San Francisco. It seems at times as if major blows to the roster are sewn into the fabric of the 49ers in recent years.
Obviously, the offense is not sunk. Brock Purdy is a very good quarterback, and Kittle should be back for the majority of the year. Oh, and that Christian McCaffrey guy is a pretty good pass-catcher. But San Francisco will have to get clever with how they utilize their receivers without Pearsall in the fold.
Schefter said that Pearsall is expected to be back for the 2027 season, but 49ers fans have learned not to hold their breath. Usually, a silver lining can be found in any situation, but this just feels like a devastating blow.
Maybe Stribling looks like a star. But does that ease the pain of a first-rounder struggling to stay or even get on the field? Time will tell, I suppose. But the vibes are low in San Francisco ahead of a pivotal season in an NFC West full of major obstacles.
