49ers have an uncomfortable Brandon Aiyuk question no other team can solve

It's a pretty big elephant in the room.

Embattled wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk could throw a proverbial wrench into his current situation and standoff with the San Francisco 49ers by simply showing up to optional offseason workouts.

No one would see that coming, but it's been brought up before. And it might actually get the ball rolling with regard to Aiyuk's desire to play elsewhere in 2026 and beyond. Plus, based on statements made by both head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch, the Niners want nothing more to be wholly rid of the situation, too, albeit on their terms.

Those terms include the faint hope Aiyuk somehow commands a trade instead of an outright release—the latter seeming the most plausible at this point.

But there's a bigger question San Francisco is facing, and by default, any potential suitors are likely facing it, too.

What's Aiyuk's current commitment to playing football?

Granted, no one knows exactly what's going on in the receiver's head. Not even his former personal coach, former NFL wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who is questioning Aiyuk's mindset now.

And that's a bigger question for everyone.

No one can assess Brandon Aiyuk's value without Brandon Aiyuk playing along

Pretty much the only entity beefing up Aiyuk's freefalling stock value right now is the 49ers, and that makes sense. They'd like to trade him. But, potential suitors like the Washington Commanders know all too well the Niners will eventually release him if no trade materializes, so Washington is content waiting this one out.

But Aiyuk doesn't seem to be doing himself any favors either.

Reports from ESPN's Adam Schefter stated on The Pat McAfee Show how it's not just San Francisco that's having an impossible time trying to get in contact with Aiyuk, but other clubs are experiencing much of the same.

"[The 49ers] have had a hard time getting a hold of him," Schefter declared. "Other teams, I think, have attempted to reach out, they've had a hard time getting a hold of him."

Complicating the matter further is the fact Aiyuk hasn't been on the field since October of 2024, coming up on two years ago when he suffered a devastating torn ACL and MCL that prematurely ended that season. Since, Aiyuk's social media posts have included far more cryptic and odd behaviors rather than videos of him doing field drills and showing he's in good football shape, post recovery.

It's fair to question his own motivation and dedication to getting back on the field right now. And that's not just a question the Niners are faced with, rather any team potentially interested in him is facing it, too.

And it doesn't appear as if there's any answer on the horizon whatsoever.
