The San Francisco 49ers have already seen their running back room get decimated by injuries before the regular season begins.

This seemingly opened the door for veteran Jeff Wilson Jr. to make the team, but not after the Niners traded for Brian Robinson.

It may be too early to say that San Francisco's running back injuries are on par with last year, but it is getting close. Rookie Jordan James broke his finger and is out, Corey Kiner went down with a high-ankle sprain and was removed from the roster, Patrick Taylor Jr. has a shoulder injury that has ended his season, and Ameer Abdullah is out with a rib injury.

Thankfully, the Niners still have Christian McCaffrey, their most indispensable running back, healthy and ready to go. They also just got back Isaac Guerendo who was dealing with an injury.

However, the addition of Robinson definitely adds some much-needed depth. The running back room was getting very thin in a hurry, so having an experienced and proven back like Robinson to back up McCaffrey is a wise move.

McCaffrey and Robinson figure to be the top two backs if they both stay healthy, but that No. 3 spot is less clear. Guerendo seems like the favorite to be the No. 3 running back, but now Wilson's spot on the depth chart becomes much less clear.

Jeff Wilson's roster spot is directly endangered after Brian Robinson trade

The Niners signed Wilson amid all of their injury struggles, and he impressed right away by scoring a touchdown in the team's preseason Week 2 game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Last season with the Miami Dolphins, Wilson had just 16 rushes for 57 yards. His production and playing time has gone down in recent seasons, but it seemed like maybe a return to the Bay could get him back on track.

In a recent 53-man roster projection Wilson was considered the odd man out, but with the injuries piling up, San Francisco seemed like it may have no other choice than to have him on the 53-man roster.

It would be pretty remarkable to see Wilson potentially suit up for the 49ers in the regular season after he spent his first four-plus years with the red and gold before the Niners acquired McCaffrey in a trade and subsequently shipped Wilson to Miami.

Yet, that possibility has now been thrown into question with the addition of Robinson.

Wilson will now have to beat out the likes of James who, despite his finger injury, could still make the roster over Wilson. The veteran may need a big final preseason game to make the roster now.
