49ers' Thomas Morstead has been awfully bored the last 2 weeks

It's kind of odd to say this, but in hindsight, the San Francisco 49ers could have inactivated punter Thomas Morstead the last two weeks, and no one would have noticed a difference.

That's because the Niners haven't punted in back-to-back games.

In its victories over both the Tennessee Titans and Indianapolis Colts in Weeks 15 and 16, respectively, San Francisco either ended offensive drives in scores or an occasional turnover, as was the case late against Indy on a tipped pass from quarterback Brock Purdy.

Morstead, meanwhile, was relegated to being a spectator throughout both contests, and there's a good chance both head coach Kyle Shanahan and special teams coordinator Brant Boyer didn't mind whatsoever.

Thomas Morstead hasn't had to punt in 49ers' last 2 games

In scoring a combined 85 points over the last two weeks, it's safe to assume the 49ers offense has been humming, lessening the need to rely on Morstead and the punt team.

Late in the game against Tennessee, Fox Sports' color analyst Drew Brees recalled how he and Morstead, when they were teammates with the New Orleans Saints, would take pictures together on the field making a "zero" hand gesture after no-punt games.

It appears as if Morstead recalled those moments and opted to replicate such with Purdy after defeating Indy on Monday night:

While Morstead's zero-punt performances over the last two weeks help illustrate just how effective Purdy and the offense have been, it shouldn't cloud over just how good San Francisco's special teams has been overall this season, magnified by a key takeaway on the ensuing kickoff after the 49ers scored their first touchdown of the night.

True, Morstead was a mere spectator for that play, too. But it does lend itself as proof just how much better special teams has been for the Niners in contrast to years prior.

The less Morstead sees the field, the better. And he doesn't mind.
