49ers rumored to get primetime SoFI Stadium takeover despite Australia trip

At least that's a consolation prize, reportedly...

The last time the San Francisco 49ers visited SoFI Stadium in Southern California, what transpired was an epic back-and-forth showdown in prime time against their archrival NFC West foes, the Los Angeles Rams.

The Niners ended up winning in overtime in thrilling fashion.

Of course, the Faithful have a notorious reputation for taking over the Rams' home venue during the annual pilgrimage to SoFI Stadium. But, with L.A. convincing the NFL to host San Francisco for Week 1's opener way down under in Melbourne, Australia, there wouldn't be a chance for 49ers fans to vocally drown out Rams fans in Southern California this year.

However, there may be a bit of a consolation prize for those Niners fans living in the greater Los Angeles area.

And it could very well be a tilt on national television.

49ers rumored to play Chargers on Thursday Night Football

The 2026 regular-season schedule hasn't officially been released just yet, but we already know San Francisco will visit the Los Angeles Chargers at some point.

That means the Faithful can show up and show out at SoFI Stadium, albeit not against Rams head coach Sean McVay, but rather against an old friend, Bolts head coach Jim Harbaugh.

@NerdingOnNFL shared a rumored primetime game between the 49ers and Chargers that'll take place in Week 15 on Thursday Night Football, which would be Dec. 17:

Again, it's not official yet. But the user has generally been pretty accurate with his rumors, so perhaps it wouldn't be a bad idea to pencil the game in on a calendar.

Just don't write it in pen.

Harbaugh, of course, was instrumental in helping boost the Niners' reputation for having a great road-traveling fanbase, and few can forget that epic season opener in 2014 where Harbaugh's 49ers brought an epic number of fans to AT&T Stadium to help defeat the Dallas Cowboys.

Now, provided the rumor is correct, San Francisco fans will have a chance to show Harbaugh how that trend is still ongoing, doing so in front of a national audience.
