49ers reveal concern with 2 injury-related camp signings

The 49ers added a couple of offensive weapons off the free-agent scrap heap, which suggests some injuries are becoming more problematic than thought.

Like most of the 31 other teams across the league, the San Francisco 49ers are contending with some challenging injury problems during training camp.

Those injuries are too worrisome if they're neither long term nor at positions of extreme depth.

But, when the Niners are losing bodies at wide receiver -- a position that's already shorthanded because of injury -- it's going to prompt some desperate action just to keep the balance of the 90-man camp roster steady.

San Francisco worked out a number of players earlier in the week, which isn't a surprise. That happens frequently, and one of the workout invitees was a former 49ers standout running back, Jeff Wilson Jr.

But Wilson ultimately didn't get the call for a contract.

Instead, according to Fox Sports NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Niners inked wide receiver Andy Isabella and running back Ameer Abdullah:

The nature of both Abdullah and Isabella's respective deals aren't known, but it'd seem likely both are one-year contracts at a veteran's minimum with zero in guaranteed money.

As for needing injury replacements, wide receivers Jauan Jennings, Jacob Cowing and Jauan Jennings have all missed camp time in one form or another, while Brandon Aiyuk is still on the mend from last year's ACL and MCL tears.

Additionally, rookie running back Jordan James missed practice earlier this week for an undisclosed reason. Grabbing Abdullah could be a sign James' injury is more serious than precautionary.

Abdullah spent the last three seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders, boasting 311 yards and three touchdowns a year ago.

Isabella, meanwhile, was a 2019 second-round NFL Draft choice in the same round and class as former Niners wideout Deebo Samuel, yet the former had nothing close to a Samuel-like impact and bounced around the league on four different teams before spending 2024 in the UFL.

Unlike Abdullah, who has a modest chance to hang onto a regular-season roster spot, Isabella is likely just a camp body to help alleviate injury shortages in the interim.
