Remember running back Jeff Wilson Jr., the overlooked (but always appreciated) bullnosed tailback who helped carry the injury-plagued San Francisco 49ers offense for much of 2020 and seemed to have sporadic major impacts when called upon?
Well, Wilson found his way off to the Miami Dolphins in 2022 in the wake of the Niners' blockbuster trade for All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey, which made sense for the former in light of what would have been a diminished role.
But, in light of San Francisco's subsequent roster moves entering 2025, including at running back, there's the chance Wilson winds up finding his way back to the Bay Area.
Well, technically, he has already.
According to the NFL transaction wire (h/t David Bonilla of 49ers Webzone), the 49ers worked out Wilson along with seven other players amid their second week of training camp.
Wilson's tenure with the 49ers lasted from 2018 through parts of 2022 before the McCaffrey trade and subsequent dealing to Miami. Over that span, the bruising tailback had 1,733 total rush yards and 19 touchdowns, and he also managed 637 rush yards and four touchdowns over two-plus seasons with the Dolphins before hitting the free-agent market earlier this offseason.

The idea of Wilson returning back to the Niners this offseason isn't new, especially in light of both Jordan Mason and Elijah Mitchell departing, via trade and free agency, respectively.
Yet Wilson would be competing alongside McCaffrey's depth, namely rostered rushers like Isaac Guerendo, Jordan James, Patrick Taylor Jr. and Corey Kiner.
Still, Wilson made his mark with San Francisco. And, despite approaching 30 years old this upcoming season, the 6-foot, 205-pound tailback has seen relatively scant use since that 2022 campaign between both Miami and the 49ers.
If signed, Wilson might only be a training camp/preseason body.
But, it'd be nice for fans to see him back in the red and gold, if for no other reason but to reminisce.
