San Francisco 49ers punter Thomas Morstead has not had much to do the last two weeks. The Niners haven't punted in either of their last two games, and Morstead is milking that for all it's worth in a very funny way.
Morstead took to social media and shared the following post:
Practicing just in case…. Merry Christmas y’all! pic.twitter.com/V5WAsVsfZF

If you cannot access the post, the caption reads, "Practicing just in case...Merry Christmas y'all," with a picture of him on a practice field with a double rainbow in the background.
Last week against the Indianapolis Colts on Monday Night Football, he was seen trying to keep himself busy on the sideline as San Francisco's potent offense kept on scoring and did not punt once on its way to putting up 41 points as a unit, with those other seven points coming courtesy of a pick-six from linebacker Dee Winters.
The veteran punter is 39 years old, so this could potentially be his last season if he decides to retire. For the sake of the 49ers, it would be great if he did not get any more action the rest of the season except for as a holder on extra points. That would mean San Francisco's offense will have kept on humming and putting up lots of touchdowns.
But, it would be a bit of a shock if the 49ers do not have to punt at least a few times in their final two regular-season matchups. The Chicago Bears and Seattle Seahawks are two playoff teams with strong defensive units, so it will be a tall task for the Niners to impose their will against these teams that also have a lot of play for, in terms of playoff seeding.
Special teams as a whole has been arguably the biggest shock of San Francisco's season. With how dreadful the special teams unit was last season, and really for head coach Kyle Shanahan's entire tenure, the unit has completely flipped things around in 2025.
That has to do with a lot of things, starting with new special teams coordinator Brant Boyer. He deserves a lot of credit for helping to turn the unit around entirely.
The addition of Skyy Morre has given San Francisco its best kick and punt returner since Ted Ginn and the addition of Eddy Piñeiro as kicker has been an absolute godsend as he has only missed one field goal all season, and it was a 64-yard attempt that hit the crossbar.
One hopes Morstead can stay on the sideline as much as possible, but it is good he is keeping that leg warm because he may end up needing it against two stout opponents.
