49ers' Jauan Jennings was a higher-rated QB prospect than 3 current NFL starters

Some may not realize that Jauan Jennings was once one of the top QBs in the country.

The San Francisco 49ers needed absolutely everything in their arsenal to take their 23-19 victory over the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles this past Sunday in the Wild Card Round, and that included a little bit of trickery.

Trailing 16-10 heading into the fourth quarter, the Niners kicked off the final frame in a first-down situation from the Eagles' 29-yard line and ran what initially looked to be a reverse jet sweep, as Brock Purdy first handed the football off to Skyy Moore, who then flipped it to Jauan Jennings.

But what was truly happening became evident rather quickly, as it didn't take long for Jennings to cock his right arm and unload a beautiful pass to a streaking Christian McCaffrey, who made just as beautiful of a catch at about the 2-yard line and fell into the end zone to tie the game at 16-16, with Eddy Pineiro's extra-point attempt giving the Niners a one-point advantage.

While the play design was a little different, that wasn't Jennings' first touchdown pass to McCaffrey, as the two also hooked up for a score in the second quarter of San Francisco's 25-22 overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 58.

And those two touchdowns certainly aren't the only ones Jennings has ever thrown, as what some may not know is that he was one of the highest-rated dual-threat quarterbacks in the country coming out of high school, even ranking higher than some of the top signal-callers in the NFL today, including the one San Francisco will face this weekend.

Jauan Jennings was one of the most highly coveted dual-threat QBs in the country coming out of high school

Born in the tiny town of Cowan, Tennessee, Jennings played his prep ball about an hour away in Murfreesboro at Blackman High School, where he served as the team's starting quarterback over his final two years.

He certainly wasn't the most accurate passer, ultimately completing just 52.0 percent of his passes over those two seasons, according to MaxPreps, but still threw for 3,425 yards and 31 touchdowns against 11 interceptions and also added another 1,556 yards and 26 touchdowns on the ground.

Given his skill set, 247Sports listed Jennings as a four-star recruit and had him as the fifth-highest-ranked dual-threat quarterback in the entire country for the Class of 2015, the top two on that list being current Denver Broncos backup Jarrett Stidham and Arizona Cardinals starter Kyler Murray.

And you might recognize some of the names below Jennings as well, with No. 6 being none other than Sam Darnold, who, as mentioned, the Niners will see on Saturday in their Divisional Round showdown with the Seattle Seahawks. The seventh slot belonged to Cincinnati Bengals superstar Joe Burrow, and the No. 9 position went to two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens.

So, yeah, Jennings was a stud as a signal-caller, but ultimately made the move to wide receiver when he arrived at the University of Tennessee, as the Vols were set with Joshua Dobbs at quarterback for the foreseeable future. Jennings did get a few chances to throw the ball on trick plays, however, ultimately completing two passes during his college career, both of which went for touchdowns.
