All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams isn't a fan of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
Anyone who watched the awkward pairing back when both were members of the Las Vegas Raiders in 2023 can attest to that, and Adams wasn't exactly shy about his sentiments throughout that failed experiment to make the two offensive chess pieces work together.
Now, both are with the San Francisco 49ers' chief NFC West rival, the Los Angeles Rams, Adams coming over most recently during the offseason in free agency after his brief stint with the New York Jets a year ago.
On paper, Adams shouldn't have Jimmy G tossing him passes. That's supposed to be L.A.'s starter, Matthew Stafford, performing those duties.
As long as things stay that way with Garoppolo as Stafford's backup, fine. But the aging Stafford, who brings a growing concern over injuries, is trending toward the sunset of his pro career, especially in Los Angeles, which could ultimately lead to Jimmy G getting the starting job as soon as 2026, assuming Stafford departs this offseason.
After all, the Rams didn't draft a quarterback last April, and there's no clear succession plan in place post Stafford.
Jimmy Garoppolo targeting Davante Adams (again) could get awkward real quick
Granted, Garoppolo returned to Southern California on a one-year deal, meaning he could be seeking employment elsewhere once the 2025 season is in the books, although it's just as possible the former 49ers signal-caller is a top option to replace Stafford a year from now. Adams, meanwhile, is in L.A. for two years.
It's not hard to see where this could potentially go.
Niners fans understand too well the Garoppolo controversy, particularly with how things ended for the signal-caller after yet another injury-ending season in 2022. Despite helping San Francisco reach a Super Bowl after 2019 and (mostly) solidifying the position ahead of Brock Purdy taking over duties full time late in 2022.
Yet those same fans watched as things truly fell apart for Jimmy G out in Vegas, much to Adams' frustration.
Perhaps it pans out again, only this time within an NFC West context in which the 49ers could witness from a much closer vantage point.
