49ers still draft a WR in NFL.com mock despite Mike Evans, Christian Kirk signings

Mike Evans and Christian Kirk don't necessarily change everything for the NIners' draft plans.

Prior to the start of free agency, it'd be easy to find a mock NFL Draft out there suggesting the San Francisco 49ers used their top pick, No. 27 overall, on a wide receiver.

However, once the Niners signed veterans Mike Evans and Christian Kirk to free-agent deals, the likelihood of a wideout being general manager John Lynch's top pick diminished significantly.

But it didn't evaporate entirely.

In NFL.com's Lance Zierlein's latest mock draft, he has San Francisco going back to a popular choice with the 27th overall pick: Texas A&M receiver K.C. Concepcion, the fifth wideout to go in his mocked class.

Indeed, as Zierlein posted, getting a true separator who'd be a long-term part of head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense might be too good an opportunity to pass up:

Mike Evans is aging, and Christian Kirk has dealt with injuries over the last few seasons, so the addition of those players shouldn't keep San Francisco from taking a look at one of the premier separators in this draft.

It's hard to argue with that logic. Evans, who recorded at least 1,000 receiving yards every year from his rookie 2014 season through 2024 before injuries sidelined him for much of 2025, only signed a three-year deal and may not play his way through that entire contract.

Kirk, meanwhile, inked a one-year deal only.

Both veterans' additions seem to be short-term upgrades, not necessarily boosting an otherwise depleted wide receiver room for the long haul. While a player like Concepcion might not have a massive role from day one, at least he'd be the next conceivable option in the pipeline, someone to take over as a true WR1 whenever Evans and/or Kirk are elsewhere.

There's always the chance Concepcion gets picked up long before San Francisco is on the clock, forcing Lynch and Co. to go with the next-best option on their big board.

However, if the big-bodied pass catcher is there at No. 27, it might be too juicy an opportunity for the 49ers to pass up.
