In October of 2022, Christian McCaffrey was traded to the San Francisco 49ers, forming a super team in the Bay Area. Since then, the emergence of Brock Purdy has made Kyle Shanahan's squad a force in the NFC, seemingly destined for a Super Bowl victory.
But the Niners' stars are aging quickly, narrowing their championship window at an alarming rate. McCaffrey, George Kittle, Trent Williams, Nick Bosa, Mike Evans, and Deebo Samuel are all at least 30 years old. Fred Warner will join them in the 30-and-over club this season.
San Francisco is home to some of the NFL's most talented veterans. If the 49ers don't turn that talent into a championship soon, they could lose their chance.
49ers' veterans make Super Bowl journey more urgent than ever
Tyler Sullivan recently released a ranking of the top 30 NFL players ages 30 and over. The 49ers had four players on the list (Williams, McCaffrey, Kittle, and Evans). No other franchise had more than three. At 30 years old, McCaffrey was the youngest 49ers player included. The other three are all at least 32 years old, with Williams being the joint-oldest player on the entire list at 38 years old.
These veterans are the strength of San Francisco's roster. When healthy, they form a roster that can match up with any in the league. Even the oldest players on the roster are still playing at a dominant level.
But time is quickly running out for this version of the 49ers to win a championship. Williams will likely be out of the building within the next couple of years. Kittle and Evans haven't shown any signs of potential retirements, but they're among the oldest players in the league at their positions.
Even McCaffrey, who just turned 30 years old, is one of the oldest starting running backs in football.
Add in the increasing injury concerns for most of these veterans, and the Niners are looking at threading the needle this season. They'll need almost all of their stars to stay healthy for the later parts of the campaign to knock the top teams in the NFC down.
If it doesn't happen this season, another Super Bowl run might not happen for the current version of the 49ers. Shanahan will always keep this team relevant in the NFC, but the clock is ticking for this roster to get over the hump.
