This season will be San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy’s fifth season in the NFL, but one wouldn’t know it based on his recent comments. The 26-year-old pro is endlessly humble and is still clearly willing to learn, even though he’s been around for a while.
Purdy recently appeared on Tim Kawakami’s podcast and said the following when asked about head coach Kyle Shanahan:
“I feel like there’s so much more to learn -- and we’ve had so much success, but there’s more out there. On both ends. Especially for me. I feel like I’m still a young player that has all this room to grow and be better."
That’s such a mature response and is not exactly what you’d expect to hear from a player with four years of experience under his belt. Most quarterbacks who have been starting for four consecutive years would probably be a little cocky, or at the very least, content at this point in their careers.
This is especially true for a signal-caller like Purdy who has already secured his bag and signed a five-year, $265 million contract ahead of last season.
That sort of money would change a lot of players, but not Purdy.
Brock Purdy's humility is a breath of fresh air
The Niners' franchise quarterback still seems to be just as humble and deferential as ever, which should not be confused with a lack of confidence. He clearly has a ton of belief in his abilities. Any man who is willing to bust out the "Dougie" on live TV cannot be lacking in confidence.
But Purdy also knows he can still improve and get better. Whether it’s cleaning up some sloppy interceptions or learning that it’s OK to throw the ball away sometimes, there is still room for improvement, and that’s what is so exciting about Purdy.
When Jimmy Garoppolo signed his big contract with the Niners, the expectation (or maybe at least the hope) was he would improve over the course of that deal. He didn’t, though, as the Jimmy G the 49ers got in 2017 was basically the Jimmy G they had for the entirety of his run in San Francisco.
There were signs last season that Purdy is improving with each year. Even though he was injured for half of last season, Purdy still had some of his best games as a pro late in the year against the Tennessee Titans, Indianapolis Colts, and Chicago Bears.
It’s that willingness to learn and improve that truly differentiates him from several other players and should give fans hope he will be better at the end of his contract than he was the day he signed it.
That can’t be said about plenty of quarterbacks.
