49ers are in crisis mode after Brandon Aiyuk's serious knee injury

Things are bleak in SF.

The 49ers are down bad right now.

Heading into Week 7's game against the Chiefs, the math already wasn't in the Niners' favor. They came into the game without Christian McCaffery – who's still out indefinitely with an achilles issue – and Juaun Jennings, who's dealing with a bad knee.

On top of all that, Deebo Samuel spent most of the first quarter dealing with a sickness, only playing a few snaps before eventually going back into the Niners' locker room. He would return to their sideline in street clothes a few minutes later. Samuel's sickness was a bit of a surprise – he wasn't listed on any injury reports this week, and was seen on the sideline getting oxygen throughout the first half.

Basically every 49ers pass catcher is seriously injured at this point

And the most depressing part of it all? It gets worse. That's because Brandon Aiyuk, who appeared to suffer a serious knee injury in the first half, was ruled out for the rest of the game almost immediately after it happened. After getting hit by two Chiefs defensive backs, Aiyuk stayed on the ground for a bit before going into the sideline injury tent. Shortly after he went in the tent, the 49ers cart came and brought him back to the locker room. Everyone's still just speculating, but the optics of getting carted into a locker room with a knee injury and then immediately being ruled out for the game is, uh, not great.

Aiyuk's injury meant that the 49ers were without four of their top five pass catchers from last season – against the Kansas City Chiefs, no less. Ideally, Samuel's sickness is only a one-game issue, but a season full of frustrating injuries continued to get worse on Sunday, which is starting to feel like a weekly tradition. Getting Ricky Pearsall back was an added bonus, though his debut (one catch, six yards) left a bit more to be desired.

It's been rough out there for the Niners, and that continued in full during in an ugly home loss to the Chiefs on Sunday afternoon. There's never been a better time for a get-right game against the Cowboys.
