Joe Staley to announce 49ers’ Day 2 picks in 2023 NFL Draft
By Peter Panacy
The 49ers are welcoming back an old legend, Joe Staley, to announce their picks on Day 2 of the 2023 NFL Draft, which are slated to be in Round 3.
The San Francisco 49ers were inactive on the first day of the 2023 NFL Draft, and they were instead watching 31 other teams make selections.
And the Niners are scheduled to be pretty inactive for the bulk of the second day, too, as they’re not slated to pick until the very end of Round 3 at No. 99 overall. Yet that pick will kick off the first of three selections general manager John Lynch and Co. will have to close out the third round, the others being Nos. 101 and 102 overall.
Barring a trade-up, most of day two will be quiet as well for San Francisco.
But that doesn’t mean the team won’t bring back a legend for a brief curtain call, right?
49ers will have Joe Staley announce their Day 2 NFL Draft picks
While NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announces all first-round picks, teams typically delegate their own former players and legends to take care of the selections made on day two of the draft, which includes Rounds 2 and 3.
This year, one of the most notable offensive linemen in 49ers history will be making the picks, Joe Staley.

If the Niners don’t trade up from their current crop of picks, it’s likely Staley will have to wait until the very end of the night when three of the last four selections belong to San Francisco, including those two back-to-back selections.
Knowing Staley and his excellent personality, though, he won’t mind the extra camera time. Even when it’s consecutive. And if the 49ers wind up grabbing an offensive lineman with one of those picks, he’d probably be happy, too.
The 2023 NFL Draft resumes on Friday night, April 28, at 8 p.m. ET.
