49ers news: 2023 offseason dates, Mike McGlinchey’s free-agent journey
By Peter Panacy
The 49ers’ 2023 offseason calendar is coming into better focus, plus Mike McGlinchey detailed his journey through NFL free agency to the Broncos.
The NFL sure has a way to keep fans interested for all 365 days of the calendar.
Knowing the Super Bowl just wrapped up last month, then NFL free agency dominated the headlines only a couple of weeks ago, San Francisco 49ers fans can now look forward to the craziness that will be the NFL Draft in late April.
It’s just a month away. And there’ll be no shortage of news, rumors, speculation, analysis, over-analysis and more between now and when the Carolina Panthers’ number is called at No. 1 overall to kick off the 2023 draft.
The Niners, of course, aren’t slated to pick until the end of Round 3, but with 11 picks at their disposal, it wouldn’t be shocking to see a lot of movement by general manager John Lynch and Co.
Here are some juicy news bits for Monday, March 27.
49ers news from FanSided network
Warriors’ Klay Thompson dons a Cowboys jersey — Kristen Wong, FanSided
"Before Wednesday’s game against the Dallas Mavericks, the Warriors star wore Gavin Escobar’s Cowboys jersey while making his way into the stadium.Escobar played as a tight end for Dallas for four years from 2013 to 2016 after being drafted out of the second round. He never managed to break out into a reliable starter and left the NFL after his fifth season; Escobar tragically passed away in September of last year in a rock climbing accident."
One would figure the Northern California basketball star would want to represent a Northern California football team and not its chief rival, the Cowboys.
But Klay Thompson is still pretty awesome, and no one will fault him for honoring his late friend.
Updated NFL power rankings after Aaron Rodgers goes to Jets — Sayre Bedinger, NFL Spin Zone
"6. San Francisco 49ersThe 49ers obviously have a QB issue on their hands right now but I can’t help but love Kyle Shanahan getting Sam Darnold as an option with Brock Purdy and Trey Lance both coming off of major injuries/surgeries. Darnold played well down the stretch last year and could parlay a one-year deal in San Francisco into a big-money contract in 2024 if he actually gets to play…"
No. 6 for the Niners? Seriously?
3-round mock NFL Draft, 49ers replace free-agent losses — A.J. Fagerlin, NFL Mocks
"99. SF-Michael Wilson, WR, StanfordMichael Wilson is a very smart and talented receiver, who would provide either Brock Purdy or Trey Lance another reliable target alongside Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle.101. SF-Darius Rush, CB, South CarolinaThe 49ers are yet another team that could use some secondary depth, particularly at the cornerback position.102. SF-Blake Freeland, OT, BYUThe Niners are likely losing right tackle Mike McGlinchey in free agency. Trent Williams isn’t getting any younger, so adding a tackle like Blake Freeland would be HUGE to round out this 2023 NFL Mock Draft."
Few San Francisco fans would complain about this haul in Round 3 of the draft.
49ers news from around the NFL
The 49ers’ offseason calendar is much more in focus now in the wake of NFL free agency starting earlier this month.

"First day: April 17OTAs: May 22-23, May 25, May 30-May 31, June 2, June 5-6, June 8Mandatory minicamp: June 13-15"
Training camp dates aren’t announced yet, but it’s crucial to know that San Francisco’s offseason program begins in less than a month.
Also, the 2023 NFL Draft kicks off on Thursday, April 27 and will last through Saturday, April 29.

Mike McGlinchey details his NFL free agency journey from 49ers to Broncos — Nick Wagoner, ESPN
"There were no surprises, that’s for sure. John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan kept me updated the whole time, and they were very clear about what was going to happen. But I definitely got a behind-the-curtain look at how the sausage is made in the NFL. After the 2021 season, they both told me, “We may even look to move you at some point. We’re projecting into the future, and we think you’re going to get priced out. We want to get something in return.”"
McGlinchey subsequently signed with the Denver Broncos on a three-year deal, one which the 49ers wouldn’t have likely been able to match.
Currently, it appears as if the Niners’ contingency plan is to replace McGlinchey with a backup lineman, Colton McKivitz.
49ers post-NFL free agency projected 53-man roster — Matt Maiocco, NBC Sports Bay Area
"This is how the team’s roster looks right now:Quarterback (3): Trey Lance, Brock Purdy, Sam DarnoldRegardless of the to-be-determined order to open the season, the 49ers are virtually guaranteed to keep three quarterbacks on their 53-man roster. These are the three."
San Francisco gave Darnold a one-year, $4.5 million contract with $3.5 million guaranteed.
That’s not the kind of money dished out for someone who’s solely a training-camp body.
49ers must prioritize replacing Charles Omenihu via NFL Draft — Nicholas McGee, Niners Nation
"[It] is Omenihu, whose skill set was always likely to be the most difficult for the 49ers to find on the open market. Though the 49ers have taken low-risk bets on Clelin Ferrell and Austin Bryant to give them veteran options on the edge, neither can claim to fill the void left by Omenihu."
Omenihu was one of the 49ers’ better rotational pass-rushers last year, and he opted to join the Kansas City Chiefs in NFL free agency after registering 4.5 sacks during the regular season.
The Niners can hope Ferrell, Bryant or second-year pro Drake Jackson can make up the difference in 2023.
