49ers just landed the most compensatory picks in NFL in 2023

The 49ers are receiving more compensatory NFL Draft picks than any other team in the league heading into the 2023 season.

Precisely how the NFL awards teams with compensatory picks for the draft can be a complex and health-threatening endeavor.

However, a number of sites like Over the Cap have gotten pretty good at predicting how those picks will be dished out.

In the San Francisco 49ers’ case, developing minority coaches and executives who take on bigger roles elsewhere in the league is a pretty straightforward way to gain additional picks.

The NFL released all compensatory picks on Thursday for the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft, and the Niners ended up with seven of them in total.

That’s the most in the league, as broken down by Heavy on Sports’ Matt Lombardo:

Picks in Round 3 stem from other teams hiring away minority coaches and assistants, including Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel and Washington Commanders general manager Martin Mayhew a year ago.

Most recently, San Francisco watched defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans land with the Houston Texans as their next head coach, while Ran Carthon left to become the Tennessee Titans’ new general manager.

The 49ers also gained compensatory picks from a net loss of qualifying free agents last offseason, including running back Raheem Mostert and left guard Laken Tomlinson.

How many picks do the 49ers have for the 2023 NFL Draft

The Niners were expected to receive a good deal of comp picks for 2023, and they got the following:

• Nos. 99, 101 and 102 overall (Round 3)
• No. 173 overall (Round 5)
• No. 216 overall (Round 6)
• Nos. 253 and 255 overall (Round 7)

As a result, San Francisco will now have 11 picks total in the 2023 NFL Draft, the remaining balance either being the 49ers’ own or ones acquired via trades.
